Growing up, my mom would make her beef stew. It was chock full of beef, carrots, celery, onions, tomatoes and potatoes. The stew would slowly simmer and thicken over the stove. The flavors from the ingredients would take their time mingling and getting to know each other and the scents would permeate throughout the house. When finished, we would ladle a big scoop of stew over a hot bowl of rice. Ahh, so delicious. Definitely a comfort food from my childhood. Finding a song that provided me just as much comfort as my mom’s beef stew may be a bit of a challenge.
I often find a music connection to hiking trails. I hike through the mountains with my ear pods on and the quiet of the morning and music blend with my thoughts. Sometimes I open Pandora for variety as I traverse the switchbacks up and down the mountain. For about a year, Fleetwood Mac’s Landslide always found it’s way on my trail. Landslide in the background as I ascend and descend would move my thoughts to my own ebbs and flows in life.
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
It always became emotional for me, but at the same time brought a sense of comfort and hope. Moments like these are very therapeutic and release the physical and emotional stress that weigh me down. I recently moved and hiking has been put on back burner. I definitely feel a difference with it’s absence. There are no good excuses for not getting up off the sofa on the weekends and getting back to nature. I think this summer is the perfect time for a change and to hit the trails once again.

I took my love, I took it down I climbed a mountain and I turned around And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills 'Till the landslide brought me down Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can I sail through the changing ocean tides? Can I handle the seasons of my life? Well, I've been afraid of changing 'Cause I've built my life around you But time makes you bolder Even children get older And I'm getting older too Well, I've been afraid of changing 'Cause I've built my life around you But time makes you bolder Even children get older And I'm getting older too Oh, I'm getting older too Oh, take my love, take it down Oh, climb a mountain and turn around And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills Well the landslide will bring it down And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills Well the landslide will bring it down, oh oh The landslide will bring it down
Truly therapeutic… stew and music. 🎯

I’ve been thinking about asking for the recipe and giving it a try. It may not live up to mom’s, but it’s worth a shot.

this song is a classic. and stews are the best, specially when the air is cool and crisp.
