My Gen X Playlist: The Story – Brandi Carlile

I typically have Pandora playing in the background when I’m working. I like the variety and I get to listen to artists that I may not typically listen to. That’s how I was introduced to Brandi Carlile. I remember the first time hearing The Story – she blew me away. I think what first got me was her voice, how she navigates between a soft acoustic sound then suddenly hits you with a hard rock guitar, then back acoustic again. Her voice will crack and sometimes growl at all the right moments in such a beautiful way. I’m not a music expert, so I’m sure my description is not doing it any justice. All I can say is that her singing and storytelling is wonderful and she has become one of my favorite artists.

The song is nothing extra until we began playing with Brandi, and she was able to put some depth into it. It’s like she has all these stories about the things she withstood in life. You know, when you experience a lot of suffering, regrets, and struggles in life, and you feel hopeless. But one day, you meet this special person who changes everything, who gives you comfort and contentment.
