There are a lot of happy songs that come to mind. However, it’s one thing to be a song about happiness, it’s another to feel “the happy” from the get go and continue to rise from there. The vibe from Chumbawamba’s Tubthumping definitely gives them the nod. Although there is an underlying theme of the struggling middle class, it’s difficult to deny Tubthumping is also simply a drinking song.
First and foremost, it is a drinking song. According to Boff Whalley, the song was inspired by a neighbor of his in Ireland. This neighbor, who always sang “Danny Boy” (hence the reference in the song) would come home drunk many a night and fall down on his face. And yet, he would continue to get up again and again.

When I read the backstory, I first amusingly smiled, then on second thought felt a little sorry for the guy. But the lyrics continue with the stumbling neighbor saying:
Don’t cry for me. Next door neighbor.
If he is good with it, I’m good as well. Cheers to perseverance and may you always get up when knocked down.

Didn’t they play the chorus at “the Joe” when the visiting team would score?

This was also a song they did for the hell of it to see if “ANYTHING” could be a hit song. Chumbawumba is an antiestablishment anarchist group. They really had no interest in writing a hit song ya know…but I’m sure they laughed all the way to the bank.

I read that the other day. I was surprised by the antiestablishment leaning, but I’d only heard this one hit wonder. It makes me want to search out there other stuff

Some of their music is very cool 😁 I had a friend back in the day that was into them because they were anarchists. I don’t even think he ever bought the album with tubthumping on it lol

Yeah, it wouldn’t be right if he did! Going back and listening to the songs I grew up with has been interesting. Totally different lens. It’s cool

Did you see the episode of Ghosts were in hell, Tubthumping is playing on a loop? I had that song stuck in my head all night. Even went to bed singing it to my dog. 😂🐕

Haha… yes, it’s so catchy, I can see how it would be looped in your head. Lucky doggy was serenaded to sleep!

Speaking of good crime series, have you watched Wallander BBC or read the books by Henning Mankell? Excellent works.

Shetland is good as well. It is based on a series of books but I haven’t started those.

I haven’t seen that yet. I remember it was in my list to see. I think I missed my opportunity because I don’t think it’s on Netflix any longer. If they ever bring it back, I’ll be sure to watch it. Thanks for the recommendation!
