I don’t have the secret to success, but can provide thoughts on what I’ve learned through trial and error.
Planning is an important step and provides a framework towards achieving goals; however, there are other areas just as important to improve chances of success. Focus is key. It is important to keep a multi-directional focus within view – what’s in front, behind, sideways and ahead. Learn from the the past as you work in the present. Look side to side to anticipate potential pitfalls while keeping an eye on the road ahead. Flexibility is crucial. Unfortunately, something will go wrong and a sudden left turn will be thrown in your path. It’s important to be able to take stock, adjust and navigate back on track. Grit may be the most important game changer.
Grit is a personality trait possessed by individuals who demonstrate passion and perseverance toward a goal despite being confronted by significant obstacles and distractions.

Fighting to overcome adversity is not an easy feat and takes courage and determination to dig deep. Everything may be telling you to quit, but you refuse and work hard to see it through to the end. Many times I’ve had baskets overflowing with grit. Other times, I’ve come up short. Grit can be the determining factor of success – so yeah, I love grit. When it’s in low supply and I’m down in need inspiration, music tends to help me. Sometimes loud music. The Alarm’s Sixty-Eight Guns is the perfect rallying cry.

Sixty-Eight Guns was released on The Alarm’s debut album, Declaration. The entire album feels like an anthem to fight and persevere. It’s given me the pick me up I needed to stand up and continue fighting.
