Eating the local food is always a fun part of traveling. You get to experience the culture through your tastebuds. I’m always game to try something new and I would never say no if served something unusual. Once while I was traveling, we went to a local tapas restaurant with for authentic food. Because of the language barrier, I left the ordering to a friend. I ate a thinly sliced meat that I assumed was carpaccio. When I asked my friend what it was, he said in broken English, “Horse sushi”. Obviously an error in translation. I said, “You mean moo moo?” thinking it was beef. He shook his head no. Ugh. I just ate raw horse. A little fair warning would have been nice. It didn’t taste bad, but the thought of eating horse made me pause. Not to offend, I ate another slice and washed it down with a beer. This is not a common dish and I think he wanted to give me a unique taste of his country. Would I ever eat it again? Probably not, unless I was a guest and not wanting to offend the host. It was definitely an experience that I will never forget. As a side note, different cultures have different cuisines and I hope this dish does not offend anyone reading this post. I’m just sharing a memorable unique experience from my travels.
In 1985, Echo and the Bunnymen released Bring on the Dancing Horses. This is another song from the Pretty in Pink soundtrack. Originally, the soundtrack was going to only include an original score.
Pretty in Pink the soundtrack almost didn’t become the soundtrack people have loved for generations now. First-time film director Howard Deutch had wanted more of a film score or theme music kind of soundtrack, but John Hughes talked him out of it, encouraging and influencing him to use New Wave, Post-Punk and maybe lesser-known recording artists
At least two of the songs released from the soundtrack were recorded specifically for the film Pretty in Pink: “If You Leave” by Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, and “Bring On The Dancing Horses” by Echo & The Bunnymen.

John Hughes was a genius in the 80’s – great movies and music. This is one of my favorite movie soundtracks ever. If you haven’t seen his movies, I encourage you to check them out to get a little taste of Gen X and the 80’s.

Jimmy Brown
Made of stone
Charlie Clown
No way home
Bring on the dancing horses
Headless and all alone
Shiver and say the words
Of every lie you've heard
First I'm gonna make it
Then I'm gonna break it
Till it falls apart
Hating all the faking
And shaking while I'm breaking
Your brittle heart
Billy stands
All alone
Sinking sand
Skin and bone
Bring on the dancing horses
Wherever they may roam
Shiver and say the words
Of every lie you've heard
First I'm gonna make it
Then I'm gonna break it
Till it falls apart
Hating all the faking
And shaking while I'm breaking
Your brittle heart
Brittle heart
Brittle heart
Brittle heart
And my little heart
Goes

Hating all the faking
And shaking while you're breaking
My brittle heart
Brittle heart
Brittle heart
And our little heart
Goes
Bring on the new messiah
Wherever he may roam
Bring on the new messiah
Wherever he may roam
Bring on the new messiah
Wherever he may roam
Bring on the new messiah
Wherever he may roam
Moral of the story… never ask what it is you’re eating. Just eat and enjoy. 🙂
