My Gen X Playlist: Only You – Alison Moyet

So I’m a little mixed up on the daily prompts. I’ve already answered this one. This may be the universe’s way of giving me a little breathing room. I’ll take it. Here is a great song instead.

I was in the mood for the 80’s this morning and was listening to Only You by Yaz. This song always reminds me of a moment in college. I was with a bunch of friends when this song came on. It started out slowly with one person singing, then a slow cascade of people joining in. Eventually we were all singing together in unison. I like thinking about carefree moments like this.

The original had a heavy synthesizer sound, characteristic of the new wave times. The version that I mostly listen to recently is Alison Moyet’s live version at the 2016 Burberry Fashion Show. She is accompanied by an orchestra and 40 years later, she still sounds amazing. I never get tired listening to her.

  1. I didn’t recognize that song, so I clicked on your link to watch the YouTube video. Wow! It’s beautiful! With the orchestra playing, I can imagine you and your friends from college standing behind them, one beginning to sing, then another joining, then another until everyone was singing together like a choir adding background vocals. Thank you for that happy start to my day. 🙂

  4. Thanks for the introduction to the 2016 version… I didn’t know about it! I too recall Moyet/Yaz from their early years. A few of her songs have been popping up on my personalized Apple stream lately, which is probably a sign I should make a post about one of her songs.

    WP is sure glitchy these days… I see folks on business plans have lost their like/comment functions and some of the editing widgets I use are acting up. It’s inconsistent so it’s hard to even articulate further to them what’s going on though they’re following up with me to do so.
