The day after Thanksgiving is for left overs and turkey brain fog. I’ve decided to take a day off from the daily prompt.
Earlier I was reading a blog by songoftheday about one of my favorite songs – Everyday is Like Sunday. Morrissey sang the original, but the Pretenders and 10,000 Maniacs also covered it as well. I like all three versions. They each have a different feel.
Morrissey has a more melancholy flavor. I can’t help feel the sadness.
The Pretenders has a lazy Sunday afternoon feel. If feels like a day that drips by.
10,000 Maniacs has a slightly hopeful feel. All is not yet lost.
I enjoy all three versions. Even though the lyrics are a bit dark, it’s still a beautiful song.
If you have time, give songoftheday’s blog a try. He likens his blog to his his personal liner notes to the music he listens to. I am both reminded of songs of my past and introduced to new songs I’d never encounter if it wasn’t for his blog. Check it out.

Trudging slowly over wet sand
Back to the bench
Where your clothes were stolen
This is the coastal town
That they forgot to close down
Armageddon—come, Armageddon! Come, Armageddon! Come!
Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey
Hide on the promenade
Etch a postcard,
"How I dearly wish I was not here."
In the seaside town
...that they forgot to bomb
Come! Come! Come—nuclear bomb!
Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey
Trudging back over pebbles and sand
And a strange dust lands on your hands
And on your face, on your face, on your face, on your face
Everyday is like Sunday
"Win Yourself A Cheap Tray"
Share some greased tea with me
Everyday is silent and grey
Thanks so much for the shout-out! Likewise, I’m discovering and rediscovering songs through your blog.
I enjoyed our online dialogue about this particular song and am grateful you introduced me to 10,000 Maniacs’ rendition. Your descriptions of the three versions are bang-on and while I still favour the Pretenders’ version, knowing more about the song (the dark lyrics you refer to) has helped me to appreciate each of the interpretations. Cheers!
