There is just something about Friday after a long hard week or the anticipation of weekend plans. A trip, an event, a date with that certain someone. Those types of Fridays are best. I wish I could have them every day of the week.
The Cure released Friday I’m in Love in 1992. It’s an uncharacteristic happy song from a band that typically walked the gloomy path. Who knew it originally wasn’t suppose to be an upbeat pop song.
“I remember driving home one Friday afternoon to have the weekend off. And I started to think of this really great chord sequence. I was about 20 minutes away from the studio. So I turned around, went back to the studio and everyone was still there.”
If things couldn’t get anymore serendipitous, Smith revealed: “We actually recorded it that Friday night. So from then on it was always just called ‘Friday’. Then, when I came to do the words for it, I thought, why don’t I do a song about that Friday feeling? It’s a thing you have at school, and lots of people work at jobs they don’t really enjoy. So that Friday afternoon feeling is something you look forward to.”
Just drink that in for a second: Robert Smith, the Robert Smith, set out to write a ‘Friday song’ to make you feel happy and impatient for more happiness. It’s a beautiful moment of conversely positioned paradigms converging to make one beautifully organic moment of joy. Robert Smith, the happy-go-lucky pop star.

This was originally recorded in the key of D but Smith accidentally sped it up by a quarter tone, which gave the tune a brighter sound. “I was playing with the vari-speed [pitch control] and forgot to turn it off,” he told Guitar Player in 1992. “The whole feel changed…”

I’ve always liked this upbeat song. But what if it wasn’t accidentally sped up in the studio? Here is a slower acoustic cover by Sophie Marks. You gotta love the strings, especially that guy that looks like John Lennon playing the violin. Enjoy.

I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday I'm in love
Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love
Saturday wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday never hesitate...
I don't care if Monday's black
Tuesday, Wednesday heart attack
Thursday never looking back
It's Friday I'm in love
Monday you can hold your head
Tuesday, Wednesday stay in bed
Or Thursday watch the walls instead
It's Friday I'm in love
Saturday wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday never hesitate...
Dressed up to the eyes
It's a wonderful surprise
To see your shoes and your spirits rise
Throwing out your frown
And just smiling at the sound
And as sleek as a shriek
Spinning round and round
Always take a big bite
It's such a gorgeous sight
To see you eat in the middle of the night
You can never get enough
Enough of this stuff
It's Friday
I'm in love
I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday, I'm in love
Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love
Cool cover. The John Lennon look alike on violin really makes it!

The violin definitely takes it to next level. I was thinking the same thing

I don’t say this lightly: The Cure are my favorite band of all time. Just like Heaven is my favorite song of all time. This one’s good. But so many are. Thanks for sharing. I might not be in love on Friday, but it will still be awesome. Lol

Boys Don’t Cry was the first Cure song I ever heard. It’s what got me hooked on them. Letter to Elise has been playing in my head lately. Such a great tune.

Yes, I love that one too. Love Cats is one of my faves. I bought the poster for the Paris November 28 2022 show. It has two black cats on it with their tails forming a heart. It’s hanging in my living room. I waited like six weeks for that thing. I had a cassette of the B-side songs and I loved that cassette. Back to more mainstream, Close To Me is another one of my favorites.

Huh another new song! So MTV debuted right as I was off to (a very strict) college and I never really got into it. I love seeing all the videos now and thinking about the creativity that bands and singers expressed through these videos.

I think Sophie Mark’s version is beautiful, but it gives me a feeling of melancholy. I’ll stick with the original, which puts a spring in my step and a smile on my face. 😁

Yes, you can’t go wrong with the original!

I’ve always liked the song, too, as a counter to The Cure’s darker stuff. Kind of like their “Just Like Heaven,” from the movie of the same name. Joyous. Out of place in a sense for the reasons we’ve both mentioned, but likewise, a solid track.

PS: I like those kinds of Fridays too… though as a retiree I suppose I might seek them out… every day?
