My parents were always busy, but found some relief when they finished putting four kids through college. My father was still running his small business and playing basketball and tennis on the weekends. My mother had her hands full teaching third grade. Both were not grandparents yet, but that was right around the corner in the coming years. Grandkids kept my parents young and full of joy. That was their second act in life and they were great at it.
My father and I were thirty years apart. Tracing back to the year he was my age, Rolling Stone had Green Day’s Dookie as the number one alternative rock album in 1994. One of my favorite songs from the album is She. Apparently, I’m not the only one that calls it a favorite.
This is one of Billie Joe Armstrong’s favorite songs, and one he makes sure is included in every Green Day show. “I will play ‘She’ for the rest of my life,” he told Rolling Stone in 2014. “It has aged well with me.”

Thirty years old and it still sounds great. Yes, it definitely aged well.

She...
She screams in silence
A sullen riot penetrating through her mind
Waiting for a sign
To smash the silence with the brick of self-control
Are you locked up in a world
That's been planned out for you?
Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?
Scream at me until my ears bleed
I'm taking heed just for you
She...
She's figured out
All her doubts were someone else's point of view
Waking up this time
To smash the silence with the brick of self-control
Are you locked up in a world
That's been planned out for you?
Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?
Scream at me until my ears bleed
I'm taking heed just for you
Are you locked up in a world
That's been planned out for you?
Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?
Scream at me until my ears bleed
I'm taking heed just for you
Your link to Rolling Stone is making me feel like an elder GenXer. It’s like I stopped listening to new music after college. 1994 had cool songs but none bring up specific memories. That’s why your Spotify playlist is great. I can revisit stuff that I missed!

I can really relate. 80’s music bring back more memories for me. I love 90’s music, but it’s not tied to certain moments in life like the 80s are

I know what you mean when you say that grandkids kept your parents young and full of joy! That happened for my parents as well. Even my brother changed for the better when he became a grandpa. You get all the benefits of being a parent without all of the responsibility!

Wow, I’ve gotten far behind on blogs again. Great song choice! I don’t know a lot of Green Day but this has their characteristic energy and vibe.
And I guess I’m in my “second act” now. Far easier than the first!!!
