These days I don’t really ask for advice. Most times, a fifty plus year life is enough to weigh upon when deciding life choices. Do I always settle on the best choice? Absolutely not. But I don’t expect to. I’ve always believed there are no right or wrong answers for the majority of life’s choices. There are only decisions with outcomes of varying degrees. I just try to do my best and hope for sunshine.
I do have a short list of people in my head that I think about and ask the question,
What would (insert name here) do?
These include people both alive and who have passed whose opinion I value. I put them in my shoes and imagine how they would decide. This is as close as it gets for me asking for advice. And you are probably asking the obvious question, why not call the living people on the list? Yes, I could do that, but I don’t. Usually a person’s opinion is only one data point for consideration. No need to trouble anyone unless I’m truly at odds and don’t know what to do. As I read this back to myself, I agree, it sounds silly not to ask for advice. But I’m used to being self-sufficient and a little too far down the road at this point to change course.
I had a difficult time finding a song today. For some reason The Alarm’s Walk Forever By My Side popped into my head. This is a mellow song from the Welsh alternative rock band. The Alarm was a mainstream band with Christian influences, so I always assumed this could either be about walking with God or a more secular message about friendship or love. I guess this came to mind because even though I try to lead a self-sufficient life, I do need others in my life to lean on for support. While they may not play a direct role of advisor, I do appreciate their presence. Knowing that I’m not alone is always a reassuring thought.

Walk forever by my side
Never lose sight of the day
When we will run through all our weakness
On through the fields
Strewn with our broken dreams
Walk forever by my side
Stay forever in the light
Never lose sight of the way
For I alone can't face the future
I need your strength
To help me make it through
Walk forever by my side
Stay forever in the light
Walk on 'til morning
All my days are yours
Walk on 'til morning
All my days are yours
Hope you'll stay with me tonight
Lift the veil from my eyes
For I am weak and I am foolish
I need your love
To see me through the darkness
Hope you'll stay with me tonight
Walk on 'till morning
All my days are yours
Walk on 'till morning
All my days are yours
Very nice! Sometimes just being present for another person is the very best way to be supportive. I like this song. It makes me think of the anthem from Carousel “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” I was so lucky to see Renee Fleming perform it on Broadway in the most recent revival of the show, but tons of performers have recorded it. It’s so powerful. Do you know it?

A good selection to match the prompt. I find I’m a lot more wise than I was as a younger man, though I still like to get my sweety’s advice on things, especially correspondence on contentious issues. I always appreciate the fresh perspective she brings to things, walking forever by my side.

That’s a good call. She knows you probably the best and can balance her advice with who you are. I think advice might change with knowing the person
