I used to drive a 10 year old Honda in college. I remember seeing other kids driving around in their brand new convertible BMWs and I thought, Man, one day… that’s when I’ve made it.
Weird fact. In college, I wanted to buy cheese, but it just seemed too expensive for my college budget. Sure, I could buy the fake cheese, you know the Kraft singles. But real cheese, it never saw the inside of my grocery basket during my college days. I guess it’s about priorities because I had no problem buying a 12 pack of beer. Just like the BMW (granted on a ridiculously smaller scale), one day I’d be able to afford cheese. Funny how this memory stuck out til this day. BMWs and cheddar.
Over time, perspectives change. I stopped thinking about that BMW. And yes, I now buy cheese at the supermarket. I’ve learned other things in life are far more important. I now have a simpler bar for having it all: warm home, loving family and friends, good health and lasting memories. If I have these, then I have it made.
I was thinking about an overarching theme from my list and the band name House of Love came to mind. The Beatles and the Stones was released in 1990. I remember buying this CD used. There was a song or two I recognized from the radio, but bought this CD specifically for The Beatles and the Stones. It was such a cool chill song and the guitar riff and chorus got me. I read the lyrics and didn’t really understand them. Even now with a search, nothing really comes up. But that’s OK. I have this relationship with a lot of songs. I just like the way this song makes me feel.

Look at him shouting out
Loud as thunder out at sea
He wants a bomb
So do we
A bomb from the sky
Is the perfect crime
Shoulder on shoulder and heat
The Beatles and the Stones
Sucked the marrow out of bone
Put the V in Vietnam
The Beatles and the Stones
Made it good to be alone
To be alone
Look at me, proud of being
Proud of being seventeen
Locking in the pocket a smile
Soft from the school
Cut by the rule
Oh I'm dazed and I'm dazed and I'm dazed
The Beatles and the Stones
Sucked the marrow out of bone
Put the V in Vietnam
The Beatles and the Stones
Made it good to be alone
To be alone
The Beatles and the Stones
Sucked the marrow out of bone
Put the V in Vietnam
The Beatles and the Stones
Made it good to be alone
To be alone
To be alone
To be alone
(Alone, alone, alone)
My youngest son, soon to be 28, drives an older model BMW. He used to be an auto mechanic so he works on it himself. He works remotely as a web developer these days. I remember the 1.5 terabyte collection of music he had when he was a teen. He didn’t share or I’d have it now. I’ll have to ask him if he has The Beatles and the Stones.

That is one thing I wish I knew how to do – work on cars. When I was in college, I really wanted an older classic model BMW – a 1960s BMW 2002. If it was convertible, even better. If I knew anything about cars, I might think about getting one. Great skill for your son to have (plus a web developer ain’t so bad either!)

He’d probably still be a mechanic if he hadn’t had a motorcycle accident that resulted in hip and arm plates and screws. He and his roommate by cars and motorcycles, fix them up, and resell them for a profit. They have a garage outside and they use their living room to work on motorcycles.

That accident must have been scary. He’s got some great skills. I can picture the living room with a motorcycle project going on!

I remember those days! I survived on ramen noodles and Kraft macaroni and cheese. Hot dog buns were a luxury. Also, my first car in high school was a 1977 Dodge Aspen station wagon. I got some funny looks as a teen driving that huge car!

Criminally underrated band. I did a piece on them in 2010 as being such. A great band with heart-warming music and melodies. Thank you for reminding me!

I’d forgotten about them over the years. I’ve always loved this song. I must have listened to it 10 times this morning.

I’m not sure I ever knew this band. Great song selection.

I’m not sure how much notoriety they got. I only heard a handful of songs in the radio.
