I’m good at being the voice of reason. Typically I can cut through the crazy and chart a reasonable path. I’ve learned sometimes it’s difficult to see the forest between the trees, especially when you are knee deep.
I’m not immune to crazy. When standing in the middle of insanity, I try not to get sucked in too deep and hit the pause button, allowing a little time to let the storm pass. It’s not easy, but I’ve learned to take a breath before any action is taken. After the crazy settles, the voice of reason steps in and things stabilize. I just got to make it past the crazy.
Better Than Ezra released Good in 1995. Apparently, it’s a silver lining type of song.
In this song, the singer comes home to find a “Dear John” letter that says “It was good living with you.” He finds himself in an empty house, wondering what to do next as he watches the sun trace shadows on the floor.
“I wanted to talk about the positive things that come from the end of a relationship. There’s always the hurt feelings and everyone’s guarded and it can be traumatic, but when the dust settles, it was about looking at the good things – no pun intended – that you got from that relationship. How did you grow? What did you learn emotionally? And to experience some stuff. And in this case it was just kind of reflecting on how this person changed.”
There really isn’t any voice of reason when going through a break up. I mean, I’m good, but not that good.

Looking around the house.
Hidden behind the window and the door.
Searching for signs of life but there's nobody home.
Well, maybe I'm just too sure.
Maybe I'm just too frightened
by the sound of it.
Pieces of note fall down, but the letter said,
[CHORUS:]
Aha, it was good living with you.
Aha, it was good.
Aha, it was good living with you.
Aha, it was good.
Sitting around the house,
watching the sun trace shadows on the floor.
Searching for signs of life, but there's nobody home.
Well, maybe I'll call
or write you a letter.
Now, maybe we'll see on the Fourth of July.
But I'm not too sure, and I'm not too proud.
Well, I'm not too sure and I'm not too proud to say.
[CHORUS:]
Aha, it was good living with you.
Aha, it was good.
Aha, it was good living with you.
Aha, it was good.
[spoken:]
Yeah, you were so good.yeah you were so good, yeah that's right..
We all need a voice of reason in our lives. I tend to be too emotional. I’m glad that you are calm in the storm.

“I’ve learned to take a breath before any action is taken.” That can make such a difference! It’s a good skill.

Being able to stay calm in the midst of chaos is a rare talent. I have found I have gotten better at it with age and faith, but admittedly it’s still not one of my strongest qualities.
