It was Sunday afternoon. I was listening to 90’s music and the Stone Temple Pilot’s Interstate Love Song came on. I thought it was aprapos because of the timing of the first line.

For what I’ve read between the lines
Your lies
I’d always assumed it was a song about a failed relationship and looked it up to learn more.
Lead singer Scott Weiland wrote this song about his relationship troubles and his growing heroin addiction. When he wrote it, he thought about what kind of a liar he had become towards his fiancé, Janina Castaneda, and how he had promised to stay off drugs when they went to Atlanta to record Stone Temple Pilots’ second album, Purple. He didn’t keep that promise, but in phone calls, would tell Janina that everything was OK.
The song is written from Janina’s perspective, with Weiland imagining her seeing right through his lies.
I know a few people who have struggled with addiction. Addiction takes such a powerful hold. It can be devastating – to both sides.
This song makes more sense to me now that I understand the backstory. It’s now a little more intense and a lot sadder when you understand the context. It’s still a great song, though. You just can’t beat the lyrics, vocals and the unmistakable guitar riff. I love the guitar in this song. So good. RIP.

Your lies
Feeling like a hand in rusted chains
So do you laugh at those who cry?

Leaving on a Southern train
Only yesterday you lied
Promises of what I seemed to be
Only watched the time go by
All of these things you said to me
Breathing is the hardest thing to do
With all I've said and all that's dead for you
You lied
Goodbye
Leaving on a Southern train
Only yesterday you lied
Promises of what I seemed to be
Only watched the time go by
All of these things I said to you
STP put on one of the best live shoes I have ever seen. They sounded tight as hell, and Weiland was on point and sounded terrific the time I caught them. I consider myself lucky that I got to see them when I did.

That must have been pretty memorable. Yeah, you are pretty fortunate to see STP live. Damn, that’s pretty cool

This is gut wrenching. To see your own addiction and imagine it from another’s perspective.

I don’t always know the lyrics of songs, even songs I know pretty well. (I’ve been known to make some up at times) When I find out what they really are, I’m often struck by how profound song lyrics can be (sometimes not, too)
These lyrics are an interesting snap shot of what was going on behind the scenes. Painful, poignant , from the vantage point of another. Wow.
(Your pic is a highway sign I now see every day. It’s a long way from my home freeway. Whoever thought I would miss actually roads)

I just looked up Highway 95. It’s like our 5 here in the west.
My reaction is the same as yours on the lyrics. One of the cool things that is an unexpected gift for me on this blog. I’ve gotten to know the lyrics and meaning behind the music.
