A few of the job opportunities I’ve seen are hybrid in Los Angeles. That’s an hour by car without traffic. Double that each way due to wonderful Southern California rush hour.
I started researching train schedules and learned that this may be a feasible option. I can take the train into Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. From there, jump on another train or subway. It may be feasible.
I actually love trains. Having lived in Japan for a year, that was my only mode of transportation. Music, books, people watching. There’s plenty to do enroute. It certainly beats road rage from sitting in the “parking lot” on the 405. Five lanes crammed with cars in a constant stop and go motion. No bueno.
Union Station is actually a wonderful building. It’s one of the largest train stations in the western United States and is often regarded as “the last of the great train stations”. I love the art deco style and learned many movies were filmed here as well – Blade Runner, Pearl Harbor and The Dark Knight Rises to name a few.
As I was catching up with my 90’s music, I also learned Lifehouse filmed the music video to You and Me there as well. This is a sappy love song, but I still like it. I like it even more after reading a little about the backstory.
This is an important song for Bryce Soderberg, who took over on bass for Lifehouse in 2004. “With ‘You and Me,’ it basically served as a resurrection of the band,” he told Jeff Gorra. “I had recently joined and we started touring. I got to experience the band breaking again. We put the song out, and it was the only ballad of its kind on that record. We didn’t have high expectations. We had just switched labels. I remember it stayed on the charts for a long period of time and reached a lot of people. It was overwhelming to see. It was the second chapter of Lifehouse and relaunched our career.”
Second chapters. Relaunching careers. I like the ring to that. That’s me right now.

What day is it
And in what month?
This clock never seemed so alive
I can't keep up, and I can't back down
I've been losing so much time
'Cause it's you and me
And all of the people with nothing to do
Nothing to lose
And it's you and me
And all of the people
And I don't know why
I can't keep my eyes off of you
What are the things that I want to say
Just aren't coming out right?
I'm tripping on words
You got my head spinning
I don't know where to go from here
'Cause it's you and me
And all of the people with nothing to do
Nothing to prove
And it's you and me
And all of the people
And I don't know why
I can't keep my eyes off of you
There's something about you now
That I can't quite figure out
Everything she does is beautiful
Everything she does is right
'Cause it's you and me
And all of the people with nothing to do
Nothing to lose
And it's you and me and all of the people
And I don't know why
I can't keep my eyes off of you and me
And all of the people with nothing to do
Nothing to prove
And it's you and me and all of the people
And I don't know why
I can't keep my eyes off of you

Ooh yes, trains! Hubby used to take the train into Chicago for grad school. But the trains in Japan are amazing. I hear Mr Buttegieg talking about adding some high-speed trains in the US. I would way prefer a train commute to a drive, especially in LA.

I wish trains in LA were a little more convenient. Things are a little too spread out in Southern California. Plus people are married to their cars!

People are married to their cars here too.
I visited the UK two years ago. Now those people know how to do trains.

While taking the train can be fun, it’s important to be cautious about potential theft, especially in big cities.
This summer, I was pickpocketed in The train in Paris. One person distracted me by asking me questions, while another opened my backpack and stole my wallet. They managed to run away, but I’m glad I got my wallet back.

Yes… I’ve heard other horror stories in Europe! I’m glad you were able to get your wallet back!

Oh wow, I had no idea that there is a subway in LA! We have a big problem with reliability of our transit system here. It seems like there’s constantly a problem that throws off the commutes of many, many people. At least you don’t have the snow factor there.

The subway is pretty limited. It’s mostly around downtown. We have a psychological problem dealing with rain. Snow would derail us completely – physically and mentally!

I love trains, too. Travelled considerably in Canada by train in the ’60s and ’70s before what little passenger rail we had was gutted. Trains were our primary of getting around in England and France. Such a great, sustainable transportation mode.
I’ve never been to either but LA’s Union reminds me a little of movie scenes shot in NY’s Grand Central.
Lighthouse was never a band that caught on for me.

Trains in Europe are great. I backpacked through Europe after college and the entire train system put me in awe. I really wished we had an extensive system in Southern California. I’d take it every day if I could.
