My in-laws are in their mid-eighties now. We decided we needed to come home more often to spend time with them. Although I just started my new job, I was able to fly to Hawaii for a week and work remotely.
One of the more meaningful holidays they celebrate is Chinese New Years. One of their family traditions is making dumplings from scratch. We spent an evening making the filling and folding dumplings. When we make dumplings, we typically fold 200 – 300 of them. We eat a fresh batch that evening and freeze other batches for later.
Folding is interesting. Everybody has their own style. My brother in-law and I are not Chinese and didn’t grow up folding dumplings, but we jump in and fold our unique versions. It doesn’t matter that they’re not perfect. What matters is the together time with family. We all laugh and have a good time as we sit around the table busy at work. It turns out the main ingredients are family, laughter and love.
I discovered Moonpools and Caterpillars while digging through the used CD bin when I was in college. I bought their debut CD – Lucky Dumpling. For a no-name band, there were a few songs that were not bad and worth the buck ninety-nine I payed for it. Here is Ren. It probably got zero airplay on the radio, but it occasionally managed to get some car play in my disc changer while I was on the road.

Sometimes when I hold my head in shame
I forget that I'm the one to blame
If I fall aimless on an endless journey
I'm beat up, broken, busted, angry
I can't explain, but it's true
Used to walk slowly now I'm running
Catching up's getting hard to do
Tell me now, tell me now what's got into you
Whispering softly now I'm screaming
My head starts to hurt, my heart's in pain
Tell me now, tell me now when will you explain
Then there comes a time for me to say
Just how I feel, but words get in my way
If I fall aimless on an endless journey
Will I be strapped, held down unfriendly?
I can't say why, but I try
Used to walk slowly now I'm running
Catching up's getting hard to do
Tell me now, tell me now what's got into you
Whispering softly now I'm screaming
My head starts to hurt, my heart's in pain
Tell me now, tell me now when will you explain
Used to walk slowly now I'm running
Catching up's getting hard to do
Tell me now, tell me now what's got into you
Whispering softly now I'm screaming
My head starts to hurt, my heart's in pain
Tell me now, tell me now why don't you,
Why don't you, Why don't you oh ooh explain
Used to walk slowly now I'm running
Catching up's getting hard to do
Tell me now, tell me now what's got into you
Whispering softly now I'm screaming
My head starts to hurt, my heart's in pain
Tell me now, tell me now when will you
When will you explain

Gaah! I missed this year’s CNY with my family. My own fault, but damn looking at photos my family shared on the whatsapp group made me want to kick myself all over again

How great that you and your wife could get away and you could work remotely despite it being a new gig! Making dumplings as a family sounds like fun bonding time. A friend of ours of Ukrainian descent had a perogy-making party once; it was a lot of fun, but whoa… a lot of butter in those suckers!

Perogies are so good!
Making the dumplings are just as fun as eating them!

Yes, perogies are great. We recently started doing them in the air fryer where they become wonderfully browned and crispy!
And yes, fun making and eating dumplings, I’m sure.
