I knew it wasn’t a good idea. I even said to myself, I’m not sure you should be doing this. But it was an early Monday morning and I wasn’t quite awake yet. So I did it, totally ignoring my better judgment.
What did I learn? My lap is not a good balancing place for a hot cup of coffee, especially when sitting on a beige sofa. I’m not sure what caught me by surprise more: the hot liquid all over my lap or watching the dark blob grow bigger on the sofa cushion right before my eyes. Fortunately I chose the sofa cushion over my lap and was able to clean the spill before it had time to set in.
Then the even bigger decision: Should I fess up to my wife or just let it slide? Her reaction would be a toss up, it could go either way.
I was searching for songs about coffee or spills. Nothing caught my eye. I eventually landed on Cups by Anna Kendrick from the movie Pitch Perfect. Instead of the movie version, here is a cover/collaboration from Kina Grannis and friends. I thought this was pretty fun. I wonder how many takes it took to finally get it right.
I like to imagine that after the 37th time someone fumbled and dropped their cup, Kina jumped up, flipped the table and screamed “God fucking dammit, I hate all of you”. Then took a breath, smiled and sat back down to try another take.

Reactions. You just never know. Oh, and by the way. I fessed up to my wife and she just smiled and shook her head. Whew…

I got my ticket for the long way round
Two bottle of whiskey for the way
And I sure would like some sweet company
And I'm leaving tomorrow, what'dya say
When I'm gone [x2]
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me by my hair
You're gonna miss me everywhere, oh
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
I got my ticket for the long way round
The one with the prettiest of views
It's got mountains
It's got rivers
It's got sights to give you shivers
But it sure would be prettier with you
When I'm gone [x4]
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me by my walk
You're gonna miss me by my talk, oh
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
When I'm gone [x4]
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me by my hair
You're gonna miss me everywhere, oh
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
When I'm gone, gone
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me by my voice
You're gonna miss me by my talk, oh
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
Balancing a container of liquid on your lap could never be a good idea – let’s attribute it to morning fog. Beige sofa – oh my word!
When I posted about this song – I showed the “original” cups syncopation video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWCOYJg9ps4) I also posted The Carter Family performing “I’m Going to Miss You” – I believe you commented on that post. The Lulu and the Lampshades version will always make me smile because it reminds me of my husband – He loved that video, it always delighted him so…

Thanks for posting that, Grace! I erroneously thought the original was from the movie. It’s a shame most of the world probably thinks like I did. And I really like your personal connection to it. That makes it even more special. Thanks for sharing.

Hahaha… yes, indeed! I got lucky and was able to clean the mess up. No harm no foul.

Better on the sofa than your lap! I remember one day I spilt hot tea on my lap, and it burned and hurt so much.
Nice song!

Yikes! We are leading parallel lives… knock on wood, but I think I’ll only make that mistake once!

I was gonna say, fessing up is probably the right move. You’ll get sympathy (“Oh honey, did you get burned?”) as well as props for cleaning/saving the cushion 😎😂

Lol! There was a moment of weakness that I might brush it under the rug, but I’ve been married long enough to know that could be worse in the long run!

Ugh–what a mess and what a potential disaster for you…luckily you weren’t burned!
But, it was a serendipitous segue to a fun song/video. Thank you for the smiles!

That’s a happy video that I watch from time to time over the years. I like their young energy and talent. Yes, it definitely makes me smile!
