Matt from iMartist did a Music Tag post. You randomly play ten songs from your playlist and write down your favorite lyrics from each song. This sounded fun so I thought I’d give it a try. Thanks for the idea, Matt. Here goes.
Girlfriend in a Coma – The Smiths
Only Morrissey could write and sing an upbeat song about a comatose girlfriend. I’m not quite sure I understand the music video, though. I’m sure it made sense in Morrissey’s head.
Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know it’s serious
The writing in this is genius. It’s impossible to know if he’s being sincere or is secretly glad this girl is in a coma.

Don’t Look Back in Anger – Oasis
I love this live version in Argentina where the crowd knows every word and sings along. I get goosebumps when they sing this verse.
And so, Sally can wait
She knows it’s too late as we’re walking on by
Her soul slides away
But don’t look back in anger, I heard you say
He says “feel free to join in on the chorus”
The crowd, “No, we’ll sing the entire thing”
Incredible

Come Sail Away – Styx
I love the intro to this song, so I’m going to choose that instead of the lyrics. When I think about this song, I think about this homeless man playing on a random piano.
As soon as I heard that first piano note, it was suddenly 1977 again, in grade school. I was happy again . Thank you for taking me back to Better Days.

You Learn – Alanis Morrisette
I liked Alanis Morrisette when she first came out, but was only a lukewarm fan. I don’t know why, but I didn’t quite appreciate here until now. I recently found her unplugged CD from my collection and I listen to it when I’m working. Here is the unplugged version of this song.
You live, you learn
You love, you learn
You cry, you learn
You lose, you learn
You bleed, you learn
You scream you learn
Sometimes these songs hit harder now than they did back when they came out

I Confess – The English Beat
The English Beat was my intro into ska. Although my favorite song from them is Save it for Later, this one isn’t too bad either.
Always searching for paradise
I’ll admit that I’m good as blind
Darling I confess yes I’ve ruined three lives
And didn’t care till I found out that one of them was mine
I danced my youngest son around the house to this wonderful album, and will probably do the same to my newest and incoming grandchild! Will put on the Raybans and pork pie hat, and know what it is to enjoy fantastic, joyous music. Thank you, Beat, you have touched so many lives in such positive ways.

Turpentine – Brandi Carlile
I discovered this song randomly on Pandora. It’s one of my favorites from Brandi Carlile. The lyrics are so good. Thank you, Pandora.
I watch you grow away from me in photographs
And memories like spies
And salt betrays my eyes again
I am thankful for the day i accidentally listened to one of her songs here, while i was actually looking for another video. I Thank you Brandie for filling my ears, mind and soul with you amazing talent and voice.

I Will Remember You – Sarah Mclachlan
She does this thing with her voice when she sings. Does it crack? I’m not sure that’s what you call it, if you call it anything at all. But her voice mesmerizes me.
I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Don’t let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories
For me this is dedicated to my high school sweetheart. I told him when I was 17 that I would love him forever. Believe it or not, I’m 58, a lifetime has gone by and once in awhile, when a song comes up like this, I still think of him and love him.

I Gotta Feeling – The Black Eyed Peas
How can you not like this song. It makes me want to jump up and down like a pogo stick.
I got a feeling
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good, good night
2009: I Can’t wait to be a grown up
2020: I Wish I could be a kid again

Roxanne – The Police
This was the first Police song that I liked. I didn’t like it at first, but it gradually became infectious. The way Sting sings the opening lines grabs me every time.
Roxanne
You don’t have to put on the red light
I don’t get why everyone wants to defund these guys.

Hear – Moonpools and Caterpillars
This is a random band I found while sifting through the used CD bin in my twenties. I think I paid $1.99 for it. What a bargain because I love this song.
When I hear it’s been done before
And I hear it’s quite a simple thing
Then I hear it’s quite difficult
And I hear almost everything
God I miss this. I miss everything about this era. I miss being a kid again I miss being outside til the light posts come out. I wish I could just go back one more time – just one.

I will maintain my argument that “I’m gonna start a revolution from my bed” is one of the underappreciated song lyrics of the 1990s

Oh, I totally agree. Whenever I hear that line, I always think how interesting song lyrics are and what inspired them.

Very well done 👏🏼👏🏼!! I’m totally with you on the piano intro to Come Sail Away. It’s so good. And of course, Morrissey! You either love him or you hate him and I love him. Another favorite line is: “I would go out tonight, But I haven’t got a stitch to wear” from This Charming Man. (My husband is in the Morrissey hater category and loves to pull that one out when I’m running late 🤣)

I’m in the love Morrissey camp. Such an interesting artist. I love his lyrics.
I always thought the transition from slow to up tempo was bizarre on Come Sail Away. But it seemed to work. Maybe that was a thing back then – Stairway to Heaven and Bohemian Rhapsody. But I agree. The piano intro – I never get tired of it.

What a great post! Awesome song picks. I love how music can transport you back in time to feel the same things you did when you first heard that song. I think we connect to the music when we’re young, then connect more to the lyrics when we’re older. It’s as if you rediscover the song all over again. ❤️🎶

Great post! Man, the songs you chose nearly launched me out of my seat—my heart started sprinting, I had to grab a cold iced water, and somehow the songs and everything you mentioned again went straight for my soul.
Thank you for sharing!
