I had a moment the other day. You know the type. One of those that gets you all up in your head. My imagination was running amok, weaving what ifs with what might bes. I was mentally constructing elaborate scenarios, complete with complex chains of events, only possible if that first random domino happened to fall. I looked calm on the outside but was feeling ape shit crazy on the inside.
Then a movie I was watching threw out the words Occam’s Razor and it gave my mind a pause. I had an idea what it meant but forgotten it’s exact meaning. So I asked AI to refresh my memory.
Occam’s Razor, simplified, means the simplest explanation with the fewest assumptions is usually the best one to start with.
Hoofbeats mean horses, not zebras.

I liked the hoofbeats phrase. Short, simple and on point. Compact enough to slip into my back pocket, close enough to keep in reach in the event of another emergency break glass moment. Melt down avoided. For now.
That crazy feeling made me think of a guitar riff and lyrics to a song from the Some Kind of Wonderful soundtrack. Flesh for Lulu released I Go Crazy in 1986. I love the 80s vibe of this song. And even though the trigger of my crazy is totally off from the song’s, it doesn’t really matter, does it? Crazy is crazy, no matter what the impetus.
Thanks to that movie, I’m no longer empty handed the next time I let crazy invade my space. There’s no guarantee that it will calm the nerves, but at least I’ve got something in my arsenal to throw at it. I just have to silently repeat the words over and over. Horses, not zebras. If that doesn’t work, I’ll hum along to this song instead.

I go crazy
I go crazy when I'm without you
What have I done today
Just sat and watched the jets fly over
A car goes by
And the sun goes down
We talk about the town
This city's mad in the head
And sick in the soul
All the stars flew away a long time ago
Isn't that nice
Like Miami Vice
I go crazy when I'm without you
I go crazy when I'm without you
Well your life is like an infants dream
It's like everything's on TV
You see your face in the mirror
Could it be your place in the mirror
And so we turn on the TV one more time
And we see that everything is fine
But what have I done today
I go crazy
What have I done today
I go crazy when I'm without you
I go crazy
I go crazy
I I I go crazy when I'm without you
Go crazy
I go crazy when I'm without you
What have I done today
What have I done today
Sue-Ellen looks so upset
This isn't the first time
And it won't be the last
Things going on behind her back
Oh they give you a heart attack
I go crazy when I'm without you, go crazy
I go crazy when I'm without you, go crazy
I go crazy when I'm without you
But what have I done today
I go crazy
I go crazy
I go crazy
I go crazy
But what have I done today
I go crazy
But what have I done today
I go crazy when I'm without you
I go crazy
I go crazy when I'm without you, go crazy
I go crazy when I'm without you, go crazy
I go crazy when I'm without you
But what have I done today
I go crazy
I go crazy
I go crazy
I go crazy
Horses not zebras, got it!
