My oldest bother was the first in my family to get married. He had a pretty big wedding, around 300 guests. At one point, he brought out his guitar and serenaded his wife in front of the whole crowd. It was pretty romantic and I remember looking around and seeing a lot of teary eyes. It was a memorable moment.
It feels like he’s always played the guitar. He plays worship music at his church every Sunday. Recently, he bought an electric guitar and that’s been his new thing. Pretty cool.
So for his birthday, I went down to Guitar Center looking for a gift. I have to say, what a cool place. I’d never stepped foot into a store before and was surprised by the cool vibe and electricity. It felt more like a gathering place than a retail store. I went into a room where people were trying out different guitars. The vibe is contagious. I can see why people are inspired to play music.
My brother was teaching me basic chords awhile back. After my venture into Guitar Center, maybe I’ll pick up the guitar again and give it a try.
When I think of cool guitar riffs, there’s a lot of good ones. I can think of a few songs already on the playlist: Black in Black and Sweet Child ‘O Mine. But I also think of a random guy that I found on YouTube playing The Smiths’ Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now. I occasionally come back to hear his intro to the song and will listen to it a few times. I listened to the whole video just now and I’d forgotten how good the guitar is throughout. I was reading the comments and it turns out he learned this entirely by ear. Damn, not bad…

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
In my life, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
Two lovers entwined pass me by
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
In my life, oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
What she asked of me at the end of the day
Caligula would have blushed
"Oh, you've been in the house too long", she said
And I naturally fled
In my life, why do I smile
At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now
"Oh, you've been in the house too long", she said
And I naturally fled
In my life, oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
That will be you one day, the random YouTube guy playing a cool guitar riff on the internet, and someone else will blog about you. 🙂
It makes me happy that you have a musical brother. My nephew is a musical prodigy who writes and produces his own music with his wife. He also leads praise & worship at his church. His name is David. He reminds me of David from the Bible, singing psalms to God. This morning, his wife just gave birth to a daughter! That is neither here nor there, but I was so excited that I just had to share the good news with someone!

Because I’m not musical, I admire those who have the gift. Your nephew sounds pretty amazing. It’s one thing to sing or play an instrument, a completely another thing to write and produce! You’re blessed to be able to enjoy his talent in your family!

I got one of those really basic bass guitar starter kits about 11 years ago. I learned to play a few songs with the game “Rock Smith“ on the Xbox 360.
The strings are all jacked up, and I’d probably have to get a newer, better guitar, but I would love to pick it up again, even if I’m just playing off of tabs

Break it out, man! Don’t let that stop you! One of the areas that was intimidating was tuning the guitar. Noe they have an app that helps you do that. So cool.

Oh wow, he’s good! And he sings well too. He makes it look easy, but that’s a really hard song! I never progressed past the first three or four chords of “where have all the flowers gone”

I really like that song! My mom played the guitar and sang PP&M songs to us as kids. That was one of them. I’ll look up the chords on that one up on YouTube and maybe give it a try.

My late friend Carla tried to teach me that one on her beautiful Martin acoustic.

Even though I’m not miserable, I really love that song.

Me, too! Morrissey has a way of singing upbeat songs with downer lyrics. This is one of my favorites by the Smiths.

Yeah, he’s not too bad. I’ve listened to a number of other videos by him and he’s pretty talented.

He sings about a bummer subject in an upbeat way.

He’s got it figured out a little I guess. I should do the same, dance away the misery 😁

I used to play the flute (poorly) when I was younger – I admire anyone who can make music – especially instruments like a guitar where the two hands are doing two completely different tasks – blows my mind every time! Great post, Linda 🙂
