I don’t know for sure if there is such a thing as a soulmate. It could be true. I can’t say for sure. What I do know for sure is that marriage takes time and effort. It’s a spectrum of emotions, from absolutely wonderful to incredibly difficult. I’m sure there are plenty of times when my wife wanted to strangle me and without a doubt, I’m sure I probably deserved it. It’s not always a bed of roses and that’s OK. You just got keep working at it. It’s worth it.
I think placing the moniker of soulmates puts added pressure to living up to an impossible standard. You don’t see that depiction on movies anymore because it’s so rare or outside the realm of possibilities. Do I sound cynical? Maybe. I’d like to think I’m realistic. Possibly they are one and the same. This is only one man’s opinion.
If you are Gen X, you may remember a TV series called Starsky and Hutch. It was a story of two Southern Californian police detectives. David Soul played Hutch and solved crimes with his partner, Starsky. As a kid, it was a cool action packed television series. Plus, I loved that car.
It was a big surprise when Soul released Don’t Give Up On Us in 1977. He was also a singer? I remember the soft melody being a sharp contrast to his police detective persona. Interestingly enough, the lyrics match my point about the challenges relationships go through. Even David Soul doesn’t ding about soulmates.
Don’t give up on us, baby
We’re still worth one more try
I know we put a last one by
Just for a rainy evening
When maybe stars are few
Don’t give up on us, I know
We can still come through
Although this song was successful, Soul was a one hit wonder. If I’m being honest, I liked the song. It still didn’t match him, but I think I can give him a pass.

Don't give up on us, baby
Don't make the wrong seem right
The future isn't just one night
It's written in the moonlight
And painted on the stars
We can't change ours
Don't give up on us, baby
We're still worth one more try
I know we put a last one by
Just for a rainy evening
When maybe stars are few
Don't give up on us, I know
We can still come through
I really lost my head last night
You've got a right to stop believing
There's still a little love left
Even so
Don't give up on us, baby
Lord knows we've come this far
Can't we stay the way we are?
The angel and the dreamer
Who sometimes plays a fool
Don't give up on us, I know
We can still come through
It's written in the moonlight
And painted on the stars
We can't change ours
Don't give up on us, baby
We're still worth one more try
I know we put a last one by
Just for a rainy evening
When maybe stars are few
Don't give up on us, I know
We can still come through
Don't give up on us, baby
Don't give up on us, baby
Almost as good as Let her in by Travolta 😉
