My Gen X Playlist: My Hero – Foo Fighters

An email went out to get a headcount for our annual camping trip. Unfortunately I’m going to miss this year because of another planned trip. One other friend will be out of town that weekend as well.

The last of our group to RSVP is unable to go, but for a much better reason than ours. He’s decided to donate his kidney and is waiting to hear if there is a potential match. I was floored. It’s one thing to donate a kidney to a friend or family member in need. He’s decided to donate and there is a an open search to find a match. While initially surprised when I read the news, I ultimately wasn’t surprised the more I thought about it. If there is anyone I know who would volunteer such a selfless act of kindness, it’s him. Hearing this makes me want to be a better person.

The Donor Alliance created a created a Spotify playlist for National Donate Life Month. One of the songs on the playlist is My Hero by the Foo Fighters.

The playlist gives people an opportunity to listen to songs those connected to organ and tissue donation hold near to their hearts. For some, it’s their loved one’s favorite song who was a donor. For others, the song connects them to their transplant journey.

For Kristen Adcock, the song “My Hero” by the Foo Fighters reminds her of her son, Connor, who was a tissue donor. She added the song to the Spotify playlist as a tribute to him.

“’My Hero’ was Connor’s favorite song by his favorite band. It’s a song about an ordinary person being a hero,” said Kristen. “To me, organ and tissue donors are just ordinary people who are heroes. Connor is my hero.”

If I were to call my friend a hero, he’d shrug it off and shake his head no. He’s not one for the limelight. He hasn’t even shared his decision outside of his immediate family. I can see him just wanting to add some light into the darkness. It’s a good lesson for me to think about as I live my life.
