It’s morning and I only have an hour or two to write this post, so there isn’t time to call and wake someone up for an interview. I think we can switch things up a bit instead and make this work.
Interviewing. I’ve done my share of interviewing candidates for work and also have been on the other side of the table when applying for jobs. I remember my first job interview – it was a complete disaster. After college, I was trying to get my foot in the door into banking. Prior to my interview, I did absolutely no homework on the company. Zip, none. To make matters even worse, I hadn’t thought through any potential interview questions. I found myself stumbling all over myself. I was pretty incoherent and surprised the interview wasn’t halted after the second question. It was that bad. The big fat cherry on top came when I got home to change out of my interview suit. I noticed a glob of shaving cream on my neck, just below my ear.
Seriously, what the hell?
How did I not notice that big white glob before I left the house? I could deal with providing terrible answers. I could chalk that up to being unprepared. The glob of shaving cream just took it to a whole new level. And if I’m really being honest, I’m not sure if I had enough whiskers that needed shaving in the first place. I’m sure I take the prize for the biggest epic fail. Silver lining? The shame was fantastic motivation to get my act together. There wasn’t ever going to be an encore performance like that. You know, I’ve never shared this story with anyone before and now I’m unveiling it on the internet. Go figure.
Songs about interviewing or shaving are few and far between. Instead, I bring you a song from an artist that could use a shave, Hall and Oates. I believe it’s the Oates guy that has the big bushy ‘stache. Rich Girl was released in 1976 and was inspired by a rich spoiled guy dating one of their friends.
Her stories of him inspired Hall to write this song, but he had to change the character to a girl, since he was the one who would be singing it.
He came to their apartment acting very strange, and Daryl realized that he could get away with it, since his father would pay to make his problems go away.

What I wouldn’t give to be that spoiled rich guy. Maybe his father could make my shaving cream disaster magically disappear. Then again, there would be a song about me all over the radio. I’m not sure which humiliation is worse. I’d have to flip a coin.

🤣🤣 I’m sorry about the shaving cream incident but it’s also hysterical. Thank you for sharing it with the internet! It made me think of There’s Something about Mary 🤣 have you tried the Callin’ Oates Hotline? 719-26-OATES if you want a laugh!

I can laugh about it now! Back then I was kicking myself for months. So lame.
Something about Mary! Too funny. That was such a great movie!
I just googled the Oates hotline. What the…? Very obscure and hilarious!
Thanks for returning the laugh this morning!

Hey at least enough time has passed that it’s not *too* embarrassing for you anymore, right? I went to a job interview once where they gave me a spelling test. I so wasn’t prepared. I failed it miserably. Ha!

I think I’m able to laugh at it now! It took some time, though. I’m a miserable speller. Autocorrect has helped, unless it gives me a totally obscure word that makes my sentence jibberish

Yeah, spell check does that to me too. Like, how did you even come up with that word, computer? it’s not even close to what I typed.

Oh! I feel this. I’ve royally messed up interviews by being too cocky or too desperate. I can’t say for sure, but I’m pretty sure I tend to laugh too much and glisten with sweat.
I’ve never looked closely at the words before – ‘you hurt others so easily because you don’t feel pain’. That’ll stay with me for awhile. Oh the Humanity!
Thanks for this.

Thanks for commenting. I think I’ve had those two as well. Interviewing can be a roller coaster ride and I’ve found I’ve learned a lot of lessons from them. Some just a little more painful than others. I find that I continue to be a work in progress!

Ummm… this isn’t an interview, but once I did get all the way to a doctor appointment, not realizing my 4 month old had no diaper on. Never trust a child to do her mothers job… did not know til my baby pooed right in the waiting room… and my diaper bag was in the car… never made this mistake again… Have a great rest of the weekend.

Embarrassing but completely relatable! Have you heard this version of “Rich Girl”?

Oh man. That was so good it gave me chills listening to it. The rap, the harmonizing with Hall and the guitar at the end. I’ve never heard of these guys before, but I’m going to check out more of their stuff this weekend. A big thank you! I love interesting covers or collaborations to great songs! Many thanks!

That’s a fantastic story.
By the way, I’m writing this while wearing my Hall and Oates tee shirt. My first concert was Hall and Oates when I was in junior high. I saw them again in 2017.

Thanks! That must have been great concerts! Not sure if you saw this, but another reader added another version of Rich Girl in the comments. It’s a collaboration of Hall and Dirty Heads. It’s so good. Never heard it before until she added it. Give it a try if you haven’t heard it before
