It’s morning and I only have an hour or two to write this post, so there isn’t time to call and wake someone up for an interview. I think we can switch things up a bit instead and make this work.

Interviewing. I’ve done my share of interviewing candidates for work and also have been on the other side of the table when applying for jobs. I remember my first job interview – it was a complete disaster. After college, I was trying to get my foot in the door into banking. Prior to my interview, I did absolutely no homework on the company. Zip, none. To make matters even worse, I hadn’t thought through any potential interview questions. I found myself stumbling all over myself. I was pretty incoherent and surprised the interview wasn’t halted after the second question. It was that bad. The big fat cherry on top came when I got home to change out of my interview suit. I noticed a glob of shaving cream on my neck, just below my ear.

Seriously, what the hell?

How did I not notice that big white glob before I left the house? I could deal with providing terrible answers. I could chalk that up to being unprepared. The glob of shaving cream just took it to a whole new level. And if I’m really being honest, I’m not sure if I had enough whiskers that needed shaving in the first place. I’m sure I take the prize for the biggest epic fail. Silver lining? The shame was fantastic motivation to get my act together. There wasn’t ever going to be an encore performance like that. You know, I’ve never shared this story with anyone before and now I’m unveiling it on the internet. Go figure.

Songs about interviewing or shaving are few and far between. Instead, I bring you a song from an artist that could use a shave, Hall and Oates. I believe it’s the Oates guy that has the big bushy ‘stache. Rich Girl was released in 1976 and was inspired by a rich spoiled guy dating one of their friends.

Her stories of him inspired Hall to write this song, but he had to change the character to a girl, since he was the one who would be singing it.

He came to their apartment acting very strange, and Daryl realized that he could get away with it, since his father would pay to make his problems go away.

What I wouldn’t give to be that spoiled rich guy. Maybe his father could make my shaving cream disaster magically disappear. Then again, there would be a song about me all over the radio. I’m not sure which humiliation is worse. I’d have to flip a coin.
