Even though I understand what being a kid at heart is, for some reason I was having difficulty describing it. So naturally, I did a quick search.
Being a kid at heart is not a question of age, but more so a question of spirit. You can be a child by enjoying small things and being happy with almost anything.
Don’t mistake “being a kid at heart” for immaturity. As adults, we learn to become more mature and responsible individuals. Ironically, I believe one of the biggest signs of maturity is choosing to be a kid at heart.

Yes, it’s about spirit. I have a good friend who is a kid at heart. His spirit is infectious. I always like his energy when I’m around him. He has a big smile and is genuinely happy. He should teach a master class on this.
Last night we went to a friend’s house to enjoy Halloween. They set up a fire pit on their front patio and we enjoyed passing out Halloween candy. It was fun seeing the joy on the faces of the neighborhood kids. I would say that at least half the kids that came by were in high school, but the smiles were the same. What was even more notable was the spirit of the adults. My friend’s front yard was filled with decorations, big and small, with a mix of sights and sounds. He laughed and said no neighbor would beat him on volume. He even spent time building elaborate spooky props from scratch. I watched as his wife joyfully filled each kid’s bags with Halloween candy. She was excited at every costume and loved chatting with each kid, big and small. Neighbors stopped by to join and marvel at the decorations, sit by the fire and enjoy the season. The adults had the same smiles. So, spirit. Yeah, I get it.
Alphaville came out with Forever Young in 1984. Interesting enough, the song was influenced by the fear caused by the Cold War, but goes on to have us embrace our youthful spirt.
. . . the song is asking us to never give up on our youthful spirit. That we should enjoy life, dance in style, and watch the skies while we still can. The song is asking us to live in the moment and to not take ourselves too seriously.

I may have lost a step in the kid at heart category. That doesn’t mean it’s too late to try to get some of that back. It seems this blog is filling up my to do list. I’m not complaining. Not a bad thing at all.

Let's dance in style, let's dance for a while Heaven can wait, we're only watching the skies Hoping for the best but expecting the worst Are you gonna drop the bomb or not? Let us die young or let us live forever We don't have the power but we never say never Sitting in a sandpit, life is a short trip The music's for the sad men Can you imagine when this race is won Turn our golden faces into the sun Praising our leaders, we're getting in tune The music's played by the, the mad men Forever young, I want to be forever young Do you really want to live forever, forever and ever? Forever young, I want to be forever young Do you really want to live forever? Forever young Some are like water, some are like the heat Some are a melody and some are the beat Sooner or later, they all will be gone Why don't they stay young? It's so hard to get old without a cause I don't want to perish like a fading horse Youth's like diamonds in the sun And diamonds are forever So many adventures couldn't happen today So many songs we forgot to play So many dreams swinging out of the blue We let them come true Forever young, I want to be forever young Do you really want to live forever, forever and ever? Forever young, I want to be forever young Do you really want to live forever, forever and ever? Forever young, I want to be forever young Do you really want to live forever?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I like Halloween more than Christmas. Christmas is just too stressful. Halloween is straight-up fun for kids and adults!

That sounds like so much fun, hanging out with the neighbors in front of a fire pit and handing out Halloween candy! We did something similar last night. We went over to my daughter’s house and enjoyed way too many sweet treats as we watched a scary movie. She had so many trick-or-treaters that she ran out of candy by 8:00 pm! I think Halloween brings out the kid in all of us.

I love adults that go all out for Halloween – definitely a great example of “kid at heart.” Sounds like a fun night!

I just now got done listening to Rod Stewart’s Forever Young, a much different song. ^_^ Your Halloween sounds way more fun than ours. We had, like, ten trick or treaters. 🙂

For some reason, we don’t have any trick or treaters in our neighborhood, so we had to go to another neighborhood! I like Rod Stewart’s song as well. It was a toss up between the two.

We don’t get many on our street because there aren’t any streetlights on our street.

Yet another song that makes it into my rotation of word associations that drive my son crazy. Hehe.

Your friend sounds like a lot of fun! It sounds like you had a good time, and you sound like a great friend. I’m hoping you’ll read this to them. I think they’ll enjoy reading it. 🖤
Also, this was not one of my favorite songs in the 1980s, but I now love it. Isn’t it funny how our music tastes change as we age? My two daughters both love this song and have it on their playlists. They have excellent musical taste.
