I used to work on a large national corporate client. We worked with our client contact throughout the year, but had an executive meeting twice a year with the CEO. What I remember most about the CEO was her grace. She was incredibly accomplished, yet she was down to earth and warm. She had class and didn’t feel the need to throw her ego around. She could be tough, but was always polite, respectful and genuine. She didn’t have to be this way. Her title gave her permission to be otherwise. In fact, there are many in her same shoes who are the exact opposite. She was the perfect example that success and accomplishment doesn’t have to breed arrogance. I worked with her fifteen years ago, yet her impression has stayed with me since.
Everything But the Girl released an acoustic album in 1992. It was a mix of original music and covers that I’ve enjoyed over years. One of the covers on the album is from “The Boss”.
You’ll often hear Bruce Springsteen referred to as The Boss by his fans, critics and even his bandmates. The story goes that he got that name early on in the days of the E Street Band, because he was the one who got the band’s cash payment from promoters every night and divvied it up among his bandmates.

I’m only a casual fan of Springsteen and just know what’s played on the radio. I didn’t know Tougher Than the Rest was a cover of one his songs until now. Everything But the Girl’s version is a nice, sleepy, genuine version. It’s worth a listen.

Well it's Saturday night
You're all dressed up in blue
I've been watchin' you a while
Maybe you're watchin' me too
So somebody ran out
Left someone's heart in a mess
Well if you're ready for love
Honey I'm tougher than the rest
Some girls want a handsome Dan
Or some good-lookin' Joe
On their arm, some girls like
A sweet-talking Romeo
Well around here baby
I learned you get what you can get
So if you're ready for love
Honey I'm tougher than the rest
Well the road is dark
And it's a thin, thin line
But I want you to know
I'll walk it for you any time
Maybe your other boyfriends
Couldn't pass the test
But if you're ready for love
Honey I'm tougher than the rest
Well it ain't no secret
I've been around a time or two
Well I don't know baby
Maybe you've been around too
But there's another dance
All you gotta do is say yes
And if you're ready for love
Honey I'm tougher than the rest
If you're sure you're ready for love
Honey I'm tougher than the rest
She sounds like an amazing executive. Not easy to lead with grace and effectiveness.

What a difference it makes to work for a CEO who projects a positive character. Those are the bosses I remember most fondly. Glad you had an experience like that for so long.
I really love the way Tracey Thorn’s vocal brings out a bit of Springsteen while making the performance her own. I’d describe myself as less than a casual fan of Springsteen though one of my mentors worships him. Thanks for introducing me to this song and the album. It’s on the list to listen to!

Reading your description of this executive, I was reminded of the way that Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime, described the character “strong enough to be gentle“.
She sounds like the kind of boss who inspires respect from people.

That’s a great description. Not enough leaders out there like that

My favorite Springsteen songs are not the ones on the radio. I’m not a die hard fan, never saw him in concert, but I like his version a little better. Both are a fun listen. Thanks for reminding me of great music. I’m a fan of your posts.
