When I was in elementary school, I joined the chorus. I didn’t join for my love of singing. I joined because I thought it would get me out of a few classes during the week. I thought I was being clever and sly. That was until we had to perform in front of the entire school and I was given a short solo.
Oh. My. God.
Karma had a front row seat and enjoyed every moment of my solo. Sometimes I’m too smart for my own good. If you are keeping score: Karma – one. Me – zero.
Karma Chameleon was released back in 1983. Boy George was such a unique individual back then. I don’t remember anybody like him in that day. Looking back, I would say he was brave. Brave enough to be his authentic self.
Boy George once explained about the song:
“It’s about trying to suck up to everybody. Basically, if you aren’t true, if you don’t act like you feel, then you get Karma-justice, that’s nature’s way of paying you back.”
– smooth radio
While I wasn’t trying to suck up to anyone by joining the chorus, that didn’t stop Karma-justice from paying me a visit. Me, authenticity, singing in the chorus. Yeah, not much overlap there, but a good lesson learned.

There's a loving in your eyes all the way
If I listened to your lies would you say
I'm a man without conviction
I'm a man who doesn't know
How to sell a contradiction
You come and go
You come and go
Karma Karma Karma Karma Karma Chameleon
You come and go
You come and go
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dream
Red, gold and green
Red, gold and green
Didn't hear your wicked words every day
And you used to be so sweet I heard you say
That my love was an addiction
When we cling our love is strong
When you go you're gone forever
You string along
You string along
Karma Karma Karma Karma Karma Chameleon
You come and go
You come and go
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dream
Red, gold and green
Red, gold and green
Every day is like survival
You're my lover not my rival
Every day is like survival
You're my lover not my rival
I'm a man without conviction
I'm a man who doesn't know
How to sell a contradiction
You come and go
You come and go
Karma Karma Karma Karma Karma Chameleon
You come and go
You come and go
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dream
Red, gold and green
Red, gold and green
Karma Karma Karma Karma Karma Chameleon
You come and go
You come and go
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dream
Red, gold and green
Red, gold and green
Karma Karma Karma Karma Karma Chameleon
You come and go
You come and go
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dream
Red, gold and green
Red, gold and green
Karma Karma Karma Karma Karma Chameleon
You come and go
You come and go
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dream
Red, gold and green
Red, gold and green
That was the jam!

Man, I loved Culture Club, did I spell that right? I dunno. Still loved them. ^_^ I was New Wave for days back in the ’80s.
My bid to get of of classes was to work on a small farm next to our school. Worked for three semesters, and I loved it. I got out of science and one other that I can’t remember. Learned some stuff too. It was great.

Working on a small farm sounds pretty fun. I think Iād give that a try

Thanks for a fun story about trying to “work the system”!
I had the same impression about Boy George. I imagine he inspired many people to be their authentic selves back when it was so risky (not that it isn’t getting that way again in some places, sadly). And this song brings back memories of the positive, uplifting sense it always left me with.
