I’ve heard it said that you should shop on the perimeter of a grocery store. The processed foods tend to be on the inside. I’m not sure how accurate that is, but I’ve always remembered that.
I once had a co-worker that claimed he only ate three vegetables. One of the vegetables on the list was a potato. We reminded him that French fries really don’t count as a vegetable. He said, “Oh, then there are only two vegetables I eat”. He was dead serious.
I would say fruit and vegetables top our list of regulars. Not too exciting, I know. We try to buy organic, but sometimes I look at the price and I can’t bring myself to do it. I make the joke that pesticides add flavor. Yeah, usually I’m the only one laughing. But I do love a good farmers market. Fortunately, we found one close to home.
Staples round out the rest of the list: bread, eggs and chicken. I have no will power, so it’s easier not buying a lot of chips or snacks. We did make an exception. We used to buy these chocolate covered pretzels by the bagful. We rationalized that dark chocolate is good for you. I’m sure the person who determined this didn’t have large quantities in mind. It’s funny telling yourself a lie and you darn well know it’s not the truth. But you keep playing the game. You repeat it often enough, hoping it just might be true. Dark chocolate is good for you. Dark chocolate is good for you. Dark chocolate is good for you…
My shopping list was very different fifteen years ago. Let’s see:
Doritos, Lays, Ruffles, meat, eggs, beer, salsa.
I think I covered most of the food groups. Chips are not a food group? Maybe they should be. The bad part is, I can easily polish off a bag. Once I start eating them, I can’t stop. The Lay’s slogan was spot on. You can’t just eat one. I just can’t get enough.
Speaking of chips. . . I once found cheeseburger flavored Doritos. They did have a cheeseburgery taste. Weird. The novelty wore off quickly. I only ate a handful before tossing them. OK, that was an odd tangent.
Depeche Mode released Just Can’t Get Enough in 1981. It was different from their other tracks. It was upbeat, less dark.
The lyrics of “Just Can’t Get Enough” reflect a theme of infatuation and obsession. The song conveys a sense of addiction to someone or something, where the person’s desire becomes insatiable. The repeated phrase “I just can’t get enough” emphasizes the uncontrollable longing the narrator experiences. The lyrics evoke a feeling of joyful dependency, suggesting that this infatuation amplifies both pleasure and pain.

I counted 68 lines in the song. Fifty two lines are I Just Can’t Get Enough. I think that’s telling us something . . .

When I'm with you baby
I go out of my head
And I just can't get enough
And I just can't get enough
All the things you do to me
And everything you said
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
We slip and slide as we fall in love
And I just can't seem to get enough of
We walk together
We're walking down the street
And I just can't get enough
And I just can't get enough
Every time I think of you
I know we have to meet
And I just can't get enough
And I just can't get enough
It's getting hotter, it's a burning love
And I just can't seem to get enough of
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
And when it rains
You're shining down for me
And I just can't get enough
And I just can't get enough
Just like a rainbow
You know you set me free
And I just can't get enough
And I just can't get enough
You're like an angel and you give me your love
And I just can't seem to get enough of
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I agree! Chips should be a food group. 😁

They’re right, shopping on the perimeter and only going in the aisles for what you need is the better way to shop. Especially for big box stores. My grocery list was way different a couple of years ago too.

Also, I do the same with organic food. Like sometimes I just can’t justify the price.

I like your shopping list from 15 years ago. My shopping list from 10 years ago had donuts, milk, coffee, and water. I used to not cook at all. 😅

I love that list!

Thank you! My shopping list has tripled in size and quantity. Now I have to cook and feed the little monsters I have at home. 😂

I’m a fan of Depeche Mode, though this is maybe one of my least favourite of theirs. I think the repetition just does me in.
Never thought much about the periphery of the grocery store but it makes sense! And that’s how I/we usually proceed (plus how I construct my shopping list… which I often actually follow so that I don’t end up unloading the cart and realizing I’m missing a bunch of stuff!).

The repetition is too much, I agree

also, the healthy cereals are generally either high shelf or low shelf … most grocery stores keep the middle shelf space for the sugary cereals. 🙂
