To say that COVID was a big disrupter is an understatement. We used to do a Vegas guys trip, but that had been put on hold for the past three or four years. We have been going to Vegas together the last thirty years. The frequency waned a bit as we got older, but we tried to at least save one weekend a year for the guys. Last month the annual trip was resurrected and we hit the road.
Our Vegas trips have changed as we aged. We no longer gamble until breakfast the next morning. Although we never say no to free drinks, it’s a little tamer as we play cards. We make sure we have a nice dinner at least once during the trip. This time we went to a steakhouse. The mornings are not about hang overs or hair on the dog. Work hard, play hard is so far in the rear view mirror, it’s nonexistent. We are not trying to relive our youth, thank God. That would hurt too much. We’ve turned into a bunch of middle aged guys that enjoy hanging out, playing cards over a few drinks. Discussions turn to the good old days, but often times we catch up on life, how the family is doing, the latest in sports, aches and pains and what meds we are currently taking. It’s nothing to make the front page news, but in the most simplistic form, sometimes guys just need to hang out with the guys. What better place to do this than Vegas. You know the saying, What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas? Well, for us, the only thing that stays in Vegas is the money we lose at the tables. But it’s a great weekend. It’s worth it.
Swingers was one of our favorite movies of the 90s. So much of the movie feels like life in your twenties wrapped around a storyline of getting over a broken heart.
Mike Peters is a struggling actor who left New York, and a girlfriend behind, to find success in L.A. The move caused his girlfriend of six years to split up with him six months earlier and left him feeling alone and heartbroken.

In one scene, his buddy takes him to Vegas, because that’s what guys do when their buddy is down, needing help to bounce back.
“We got to get you the fuck out of Dodge. . . We’re going to Vegas. . . Vegas, baby, Vegas!“
I crack a smile sometimes when I think about that scene while making the drive from LA to Sin City. The music in the movie is interesting. The swing dancing scene with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy playing Go Daddy O comes to mind. I never knew swing dancing was a thing in LA in the 90s.
It’s a great movie, if you haven’t seen it. Is it a guy movie? Maybe, but I’d argue not entirely. It’s funny, sad, cringeworthy and happy all rolled up into one. It’s about getting over a broken heart, with your buddies by your side helping you through it. Like I said, sometimes you just need to hang out with the guys.

It’s great that your trips are happening again and that you didn’t let Covid kill them!

You absolutely know that when you said “sometimes guys need to hang out with the guys!
A confession: I have never been to Vegas. And my aunt lives there!
Swingers is a great movie. I remember there was a time in the late 90s were swinging dancing and got popular with the ultra hipsters for about 15 minutes.
Always remember: you’re money and you don’t even know it.

Loved that movie! Had a huge crush on Vince Vaughn at that time. And that song was also great. I think my ex-boyfriend bought the CD. Good times…

Great tune! I’m not familiar with the movie or the song, but love the swing sound. I agree it is good for men to be in the company of men; in the right grouping there’s none of the toxicity that’s often pervasive in male culture. Had a really good gathering with mine a couple of nights ago and it was good and grounding.
I’ve never been to Vegas though the idea has been in my mind for many years.
