If I could ask for the impossible gift, I’d ask for time. Since it’s impossible to deposit time into my lifespan bank account, I’ll gladly settle for warm wishes and good karma. You have to give good karma in order to receive it, though. Isn’t that the rule? So I’ll be spreading plenty of good karma in 2024.
The New Radicals released You Get What You Give in 1998. I completely forgot about this song. I saw the title and the name of the band and still couldn’t place it. I looked it up on YouTube and immediately smiled.
This uplifting ’90s hit became an anthem for young dreamers ready to take on the world with music on their side. The title is kind of a mantra: you’ll get back in life what you give to others.

“During breakfast, Beau would often make me listen to what I thought was his theme song, ‘You Get What You Give’ by the New Radicals,” President Biden wrote in his autobiography. “Even though Beau never stopped fighting and his will to live was stronger than most — I think he knew that this day might come. The words to the song are: ‘This whole damn world can fall apart. You’ll be OK, follow your heart.’”

Finding songs you heard as a kid is such a full circle moment. You sing these songs with your heart not even knowing the meaning until much later in life. Hang tight yall! We all have a reason to be here. Find yours and spread kindness whenever you can.

One, two!
One, two, three, ow!
Wake up, kids, we got the dreamers' disease
Age fourteen, they got you down on your knees
So polite, we're busy still saying please
Frienemies, who, when you're down, ain't your friend
Every night we smash a Mercedes-Benz
First we run, and then we laugh till we cry
But when the night is falling
You cannot find the light (Light)
You feel your dreams are dying, hold tight
You've got the music in you
Don't let go, you've got the music in you
One dance left, this world is gonna pull through
Don't give up, you've got a reason to live
Can't forget, we only get what we give
I'm comin' home, baby
You're tops
Give it to me now!
Four A.M., we ran a miracle mile
We're flat broke, but hey, we do it in style
The bad rich, God's flying in for your trial
But when the night is falling
You cannot find a friend (Friend)
You feel your tree is breaking, just bend
You've got the music in you
Don't let go, you've got the music in you
One dance left, this world is gonna pull through
Don't give up, you've got a reason to live
Can't forget, we only get what we give
This whole damn world could fall apart
You'll be okay, follow your heart
You're in harm's way, I'm right behind
Now set your mark
You've got the music in you
Don't let go, you've got the music in you
One dance left, this world is gonna pull through
Don't give up, you've got a reason to live
Can't forget, we only get what we give
Don't let go, I feel the music in you
You, you, you
Fly high, high
What's real can't die
You only get what you give
You're gonna get what you give
Don't give up, just don't be afraid to live
Health insurance, rip-off flying
FDA, big bankers buying
Fake computer crashes dining
Cloning while they're multiplying
Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
You're all fakes, run to your mansions
Come around, we'll kick your ass in
Don't let go, one dance left
Don't give up, can't forget
Don't let go

What a touching story about Beau Biden loving this song. I remember it, but never saw the video. Reminds me of all the drama and fun that played out at The Mall in pre-smart phone days!

I thought so, too. I was touched by that story as well.
Yes! Gen X lived at the malls when we were younger! Such a different time

Great post and song! I remember this one well from a particular time in the early ’00s when I was looking for a stereo mini-system and this song was playing when I was testing them out. Fun.
