I remember when everything went through the US mail. When I sent a client their completed project, it took USPS two days to deliver it, one day in the client’s mail room, a half a day to get to their desk, then maybe a day or so before the client opened the mail and read through the project results. I’d get a call about a week after I mailed it.
Now when I email the project to a client, I may get an immediate call to discuss the results. My 7 day buffer shrank to 7 minutes. Sometimes I’d have to mentally prepare myself before hitting the send button because I knew the buffer would only be 7 seconds. Barely enough time to catch my breath.
I can’t imagine things becoming any quicker. But I know that’s a lie as soon as the words leave my mouth. There will always be a more efficient way. I hope I’m retired before a new lightening speed way is rolled out. I don’t want to run out of breathing room.
Breathing room . . . Pearl Jam released Just Breathe in 2009. It’s a mellower song than their usual. It’s a nice change of pace.
“There was a lyric or something that hit me, and I picked up the guitar and played that chord. I thought, well, I’ll just go with it and make something different out of it.”
Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe” is a love song about appreciating each other’s presence by slowing down and just breathing. In an interview with The Globe and Mail Eddie Vedder explained: “There’s never a dull moment on the road – every day it’s something. Maybe that’s why my goal is the dull moment. That’s what this song is: It’s saying, ‘Just stop, and be together. Don’t talk now, just breathe and feel each other’s presence.”

I’ve never thought about a dull moment being a goal. Typically it’s something that’s the exact opposite. But they do allow you to insert a pause to catch your breath. We can’t always have a heavy foot on the gas pedal. A dull moment, Eddie? Not a bad idea. Something to think about.

Yes, I understand that every life must end, uh-huh
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, uh-huh
Oh I'm a lucky man, to count on both hands the ones I love
Some folks just have one, yeah, others, they've got none
Stay with me
Let's just breathe
Practiced all my sins, never gonna let me win, uh-huh
Under everything, just another human being, uh-huh
I don't wanna hurt, there's so much in this world to make me bleed
Stay with me
You're all I see
Did I say that I need you?
Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn't I'm a fool you see
No one knows this more than me
As I come clean
I wonder everyday, as I look upon your face, uh-huh
Everything you gave
And nothing you would take, oh no
Nothing you would take
Everything you gave
Did I say that I need you?
Oh, did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn't I'm a fool you see
No one knows this more than me
As I come clean, ah
Nothing you would take
Everything you gave
Hold me 'til I die
Meet you on the other side

It’s true, a little space to breathe is a nice goal. I can relate. I’m staying with a good friend who has a regular meditation practice. Every day she puts on her white noise ap and sets a timer. I have joined when I’ve been with her at the designated time. It’s lovely! Making time every day to breathe is brilliant. She times it so she can get a few things done before, with enough time
after to get ready for her day. I love being included in this ritual. Your post is very timely for me, I want a dull moment!
(I personally loved the turn around time of snail mail as well!) There really is less and less time to breathe these days, sigh…

Your meditation practice sounds wonderful. Making this a daily ritual is a brilliant idea. A fellow blogger suggested a white noise app the other day. I’ve been experimenting with a few and have recently started breathing exercises. I’ve thrown out the idea that I can always power through things and now appreciate the value in self care. It sounds like you are already well versed in this area. For me, better late than never!

I’m pretty late to the game myself, probably why I’m still excited about it

I remember those days. I had to mail grant applications to the government that had to be placed in boxes and weighed like 5 lbs!

One of my favorite pearl jam videos is ‘Do the Evolution’. Now when I think of them, that’s kind of like where my mind heads to.
Also it’s hard to imagine things getting quicker until they figure out a way to just broadcast thoughts into peoples brains.

Yes, you are right about USPS. I still use them to ship things to family and friends. They take a little bit longer. Nice song! So relaxing!

I miss slower communication. My older brother used to stutter. When the phone rang, he would practice saying Hello as he walked to the phone. By the time he answered, his hello sounded normal. I think I could use extra time when communicating to plan what I want to say.
