The irony of fake news is that the people who are screaming about fake news the loudest, are themselves spinning fake news the most. Shouldn’t they be looking in the mirror and yelling at themselves? If we un-invent fake news, then we wouldn’t have to think about this conundrum.
The Thompson Twins released Lies in 1983. Over the years, the song began to take on new meaning.
When the core Thompson Twins members Tom Bailey, Alannah Currie and Joe Leeway wrote this song, they didn’t assign heavy social commentary to it. “We were just trying to be wacky and a little bit crazy and come up with an idea that we could be irreverent about.”
Over time, however, the song took on new meanings, and in 2014 when Bailey performed the group’s hits for the first time since 1987, it opened up to him in a whole new way. “I thought, What are we talking about with this ‘Lies’ business?,” he said. “I realized that it was not only the lies that we tell each other in relationships, but it specifically mentions the media and the way that we’re controlled by a view of the world which is presented us through the press and TV and radio and all the other forms of media, and now the Internet.”

I wonder what Bailey would say about fake news in 2024?

You told me you loved me
So I don't understand
Why promises are snapped in two
And words are made to bend
(The bigger, the better)
Some stolen from Japan
Collected from around the world
They'll catch you if they can
Lies lies lies yeah
Lies lies lies yeah
Lies lies lies yeah
Lies lies lies yeah
Do I have to catch you out
To know what's on your mind?
Well, Cleopatra died for Egypt
What a waste of time
White ones and red ones
And some you can't disguise
Twisted truth and half the news
Can't hide it in your eyes
Lies lies lies yeah
Lies lies lies yeah
Lies lies lies yeah
Lies lies lies yeah
You say you'll try harder
But I think it's just too late
Well the car is revving in the drive
And I'm not the sort to wait
(The bigger, the better)
Some nicked from old saigon
Collected from around the world
Love lies on and an and on and on and on and
Lies lies lies yeah (they're gonna get you)
Lies lies lies yeah (they won't forget you)
Lies lies lies yeah (they're gonna get you)
Lies lies lies yeah
Oh you know I know
Lies lies lies yeah
Oh man the fake news and the fake newsers. I don’t have the time or interest. Life is too short as it is. Waste of time and energy, don’t even get me started on the toll it’s taking or the fear it stirs up. Let’s instead be race car drivers looking in the direction we WANT to go

I can’t even watch the news anymore without my blood pressure rising! I just try to avoid it. I hate the thought that someone or something is trying to manipulate me.
Great song, though!

I’ve taken a break from the news. It’s made me binge watch a few shows instead!

Thanks for another great new and post. You know, I think back to what I was doing during the time these songs were released. How do I not remember more of these songs? Who knows. I love getting introduced to them now

I’m glad you are enjoying the music. I used to listen to a lot of music when I was growing up. Some if the music may not be mainstream
