My Gen X Playlist: The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight – REM

  1. I love the quick sonic references to “Lion Sleeps Tonight” in the beginning of the song (the Dee Dee Dees). I also like the “cat in the hat comes back” havoc reference in the lyrics. Stipe’s lyrics are like a word bath – they wash over you and give you feelings, even if you don’t know what’s he’s talking about. He is the coolest ever. Now 64! Technically a Boomer, but culturally he’s ours – GenX.

    1. I totally get what you are saying. I used to read the lyrics on the CD liners and try to figure out what Stipe was trying to say. I’d have no clue after 20 reads. But the word pairings and obscure phrases woven with the melody still made me “feel” even though I had no idea of the meaning of the song. I think that’s why I like REM so much. The lyrics are like a poem that flies over my head, but I still seem to get it.

      1. Like a poem, exactly! In that way, Stipe reminds me of another great American songwriter – Paul Simon. (Just watched a fantastic new doc about Simon called “In Restless Dreams”)

  2. Yes, naps are underrated! My husband takes a nap on the couch every time we sit down to watch a movie together. I never liked taking naps as a kid because I thought I would miss all of the fun. Now, I have learned that taking a “power nap” for about 30 mins is enough to recharge my energy.

    1. Michael Stipe has a way with confusing lyrics. I used to try to interpret them before there was the internet and would be completely baffled. At least now I can Google it and get an idea of the meaning.

  3. I’m with you. Naps ARE pretty good and I’ll take the odd, short one if I’ve done a really long bike ride or haven’t slept well. But not a habit. I remember that about kindergarten, too. What a life, indeed.

Haven’t heard this song in a long time!
