When I was a kid, I learned I was born in the year of the monkey. I don’t know much about the Chinese zodiac, but I thought that was pretty cool. Since then, I’ve always had a appreciation for monkeys.
I haven’t really embraced emojis, except maybe when I send out a family text. Occasionally, I’ll add a smiling monkey face. It’s more Curious George than Grape Ape and is a happy emoji. Their appearance are few and far between, but occasionally they get to see the light of day.
I will say my 83 year old mother has fully embraced emojis. She enjoys choosing the right emoji to fit the message. It’s funny that I’m being out-emojied by my mom. Maybe a hint I should expand my emoji-sphere to more than a monkey face…
Even though I gravitated to monkeys, that’s not the reason I liked The Monkees TV show. The show was just OK, but I really liked the theme song. As I got older, I associated them as Beatles-lite. They have a few other songs that I like, but you can’t beat the theme song for a little nostalgia and a smile.

Here we come, walkin'
Down the street
We get the funniest looks from
Ev'ry one we meet
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down
We go wherever we want to do
What we like to do
We don't have time to get restless
There's always something new
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down
We're just tryin' to be friendly
Come and watch us sing and play
We're the young generation
And we've got something to say
Any time, Or anywhere
Just look over your shoulder
Guess who'll be standing there
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down
[break]
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down
We're just tryin' to be friendly
Come and watch us sing and play
We're the young generation
And we've got something to say
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
[repeat and fade]
[Extra verse:]
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
You never know where we'll be found
So you'd better get ready
We may be comin' to your town
I love that your 83-year-old mother is the queen of emojis! My father used to use them and was always up on the latest technology.
My husband LOVES the Monkees! He and his sisters used to watch the TV show all the time as kids, and they even did the dance that goes along with the theme song. I don’t get it. I never watched them, so I guess they are not nostalgic for me.

Oh yes. 💯! The Monkees theme song was the best. We were in ❤️with Davy Jones in my neighborhood. And we would also perfected the Monkees leg-over-leg walk from the theme song. Great memory. Thanks!

That’s so great! I had forgotten about Davy Jones! Maybe try the leg over leg walk and add the video to your blog!

The monkees were a combo of two legit musicians who could act and two actors who could sing and play instruments..it’s a shame they couldn’t be taken seriously as a band. Some of the later albums they play everything on are decent. Unreal that hendrix played a few dates with them too

That is great info on them. I didn’t know. Especially the part about Hendrix. They had a few other songs I enjoyed. Now you have me curious. I may check out more. Thanks for the incredibly interesting comment!

A great reminder of such a fun show… instead of more of today’s banal reality TV, we need a sitcom about a band! Pretty cool that your mom’s so emoji-savvy!

They don’t make sitcoms like they used to

Sadly, that’s true. The 60s and 70s were so great in that way. Many shows still stand up neatly 60 years later.

Never heard of the show. Maybe because I’m a US newbie, but it look pretty cool. Are they the same band that performed “I’m a believer?”
I LOVE that song!

Yes! That’s them! It is an older show from the 70s. A long time ago!

I’m a horse in Chinese zodiac. I’m not too familiar with the Monkee’s music but the haircuts, lol.

The haircuts were classic! Great comment. So true!

I loved watching the Monkees. There was always a rerun in syndication no matter when I lived and it was perfect after school TV watching with my snack. I wish they had been taken more seriously as well. DId you know that Mike Nesmith’s mom was the person who invented “White-Out” correction fluid?
