I wish there was an accurate GPS for life. Not like Waze that takes me through the most dangerous parts of LA at midnight. I need something a little more reliable to guide me away from the potholes of everyday life. Unfortunately, there isn’t anything out there so I just make sure the essentials are taken care of: a full tank of gas, functioning AC, windshield wipers and headlights, my AAA card in my wallet and a good radio station. I’ll navigate the best I can from there. What else can I do?

Mazzy Star released Fade Into You in 1993. The reason this song caught my eye was not because of the lyrics. It was how this song came about.

Roback shared, “… We weren’t trying to write a hit song – we were just writing a song. I think we had a melody and a feel and we just followed that feel. And that became the song… It was an acoustic guitar and both of us singing, and after we’d written the song, then we arranged it for other instruments – piano and slide guitar, and drums.”

I like this. It’s kind of like my life. There’s a melody and a few instruments that play in the background. They act somewhat like a map, mile markers, signposts and landmarks in the distance all rolled up into one. They disappear on me sometimes, then thankfully reappear. They flash, sing, celebrate and cry. Sometimes they flip me the bird, but I much prefer the hugs and high fives. It’s all part of feeling your way through life.

Mazzy Star wasn’t trying to write a hit song when they were stumbling through Fade Into You. They were only trying to write a song. That’s a little like me trying to live my life. I’m not looking to crack the top ten on the billboard charts. I’m not looking for glitz or glamour. Who needs that kind of attention? A simple, fulfilling tune with cool vocals and a catchy melody would be just fine by me.

  1. Nice, mellow song. I could have used this about 30 mins ago while I was in an MRI tube! I’ll add it to my “Anxiety Busters” playlist on Spotify.

    I like how you compare your life to a melody with a few instruments playing in the background. That sounds about right.

  4. I like your post! Me too! I wish I have a GPS for my life. I used to use waze so that I can avoid traffic, and mostly track police officers when I drive fast. I don’t use it anymore. I guess I’m behaving properly now. 😁

  7. Hugs and high fives are way better than flipped birds, any day of the week. GPS for life… hmmm maybe someone should establish a start-up to develop that! 😉

    Terrific song choice, I really like Mazzy Star’s vibe. Posted this one and another of theirs some time ago. Sadly, I saw then that their guitarist Dave Roback died in 2020.

    1. I think I only know a few Mazzy Star songs, but the ones I know are really really good. I remember one of your post was a cover by Hope Sandoval that I really enjoyed. That was a cool listen

I wonder if you’re thinking of the Glen Campbell song I mention Hope having sung in duet with the recording of his voice in my post on “There’s No Me… Without You (with Carole King)” as Hope is still lead singer of Mazzy Star. If I remember correctly you may have listened to her cover/duet separately at the time. As you were quite intrigued by the concept of posthumous duets.
