I don’t know why I’m thinking about condiments, but I am. In general, all ketchup and catsup are the same. Yellow mustard tastes the same from squeeze bottle to squeeze bottle, regardless of the shape. But mayonnaise is different. I know we preach equality here in America, but I’m sorry, not all mayo is created equal. Much has to do with personal preference, what you grew up on. Isn’t that always the case? My family grew up on Best Foods. For me, there is no other alternative. Believe me, I’ve tried. There are very few brands I’m strictly loyal to, but Best Foods mayo definitely tops my list.

Miracle Whip is no miracle at all. Maybe the exception is it’s a miracle I didn’t spit it out. I was roaming the aisles at Trader Joe’s and bought a jar there. Bad. I did the same at Whole Foods, thinking the organic label would somehow translate into flavor. Wrong again. The only translation was money down the drain for a jar of disappointment. What a waste.

My grandfather once told me a story about when he was kid. He said his family was so poor they ate mayonnaise sandwiches and were grateful to have them. I’m not sure if this falls into the classic When I was a young and poor stories like walking to school ten miles in the snow, uphill both ways. This may be a tall tale, but there was that thing called the Great Depression so I’m going to say it’s 50/50. Well, grandpa, if I was down and out, I may eat mayo sandwiches, too. Only if it’s not Best Foods, then I’d have to say hold the mayo please. I just couldn’t do it.

Here is an instance where I’ve already used a song that would be a perfect fit. The Smashing Pumpkins’ song Mayonaise fits like a glove, but is already on the playlist. I’m just going to swap this out for another Pumpkin’s song instead. Disarm has nothing to do with mayo, but it’s the best I’ve got for today. Who would of even thought I’d write about mayo? Odd. I’m shaking my head as I hit publish…

  1. I’m a Hellman’s guy from way back, but I agree totally on Miracle Whip. Way, way, way, too sweet. To their credit, at least even they don’t call it mayonnaise 😄

  3. Interesting to read of the Hellmans/Best Foods connection… Hellmans is my go-to, deviated from on rare occasions (with regret). Good call on swapping on the song “Mayonnaise.” I’m just glad Smashing Pumpkins didn’t do one called “Miracle Whip.”

  4. I’ve never even heard of Best Foods mayo, but I see from your previous comment it’s the same as Hellmann’s, which is the best. I feel like there could be another post about this. Like why on earth would it have a different name on the west coast? Miracle Whip is holdover from the 1950, that people like mother will never let go! Ever had a “jello salad” on the 4th of July? That’s Miracle Whip.

    1. I just remember seeing a photo of Hellmans with the same packaging as Best Foods. I suspect maybe a merger of the mayo companies happened somewhere in the past and they kept the names because of brand loyalty. Jello salad… yes! It’s been a long while since I’ve had that!

  5. Ha! We’re on vacation in Oahu and we picked up some of the 365 brand mayo at Whole Foods. Had to get some Best Foods and throw the organic stuff out yesterday. My wife said it made her stomach hurt! We should have known better. Best Foods all the way.

  6. I don’t think I ever saw Best Foods mayonnaise in the grocery store near me. I use Hellman brand.

  7. I grew up on Hellman’s. I didn’t like any other mayonnaise growing up, especially not Miracle Whip, lol. My dad used to love mayonnaise and banana sandwiches, which is so totally gross! Maybe it has something to do with Depression years, too, and not having a lot to eat. What a funny post. I enjoyed reading it.
