My Gen X Playlist: My Best Friend’s Girl – The Cars

One of our first hikes was Half Dome in Yosemite. It’s about a 17 mile round trip hike. The climb to the top of the dome brings the most amazing views. It’s breathtaking.

This was one of our rookie hikes. It was longer than we anticipated and we were not well prepared. We ran out of water coming back down and many of us were becoming dehydrated. Part of the hike follows a river, but you can’t drink the water without treating it first. It felt like a cruel joke walking alongside water dying of thirst.

At one point, a few friends appeared to be in pretty bad shape. All six of us sat on the ground exhausted and thirsty. A buddy suddenly got up, grabbed our water bottles and said, I’ll be right back. He ran three miles down to the nearest drinkable water, filled our water bottles and then ran three miles back uphill to save the day. Damn. That’s a good dude. I’ll never forget that. I’ll do anything for that guy if he ever asks. We safely made it back to camp and learned two valuable lessons.

Always bring enough water.

You can always depend on friends.

While searching for a song this morning, It occurred to me that guys are generally simple creatures. There are a few basic rules in the guy code. One is always have your friend’s back. Another is you don’t steal your friend’s girlfriend. The Cars wrote a song about this – My Best Friend’s Girl. Even though it’s a catchy tune, that’s as far as it should ever go. Just don’t do it.
