There is a moment that I like to remember. It’s one of my favorites. My sister went away for medical school and it had been awhile since we saw her. When she flew in to visit, I remember the smile on my father’s face when he saw her and he gave her the warmest hug. He was so happy. You could just feel it. It’s one of my fondest memories of him.
I was thinking about father/daughter relationships when choosing today’s song. I wondered if I knew any collaborations between a dad and his daughter. I broke my golden rule for today’s post. Up until now, I only chose songs that I already knew and liked. This song is new to me, but after over 300 posts, I think I can cut myself some slack. I stumbled upon Olivia Vedder’s My Father’s Daughter, written by her father, Eddie Vedder. I was reading the comments on YouTube and it’s no surprise this relationship hits all spectrums and runs deep.
I’m 62 years old and I have two daughters from my first marriage. I don’t get to see them as much as I would like to but I love them both so very much that it hurts sometimes. I also have two stepdaughter’s almost the same ages as my girls and I see one fairly often as she lives in the same city as me now. I miss my girls every day. I have Alzheimer’s disease now which, so far, is robbing me of current, short term memory but leaves most long term memories intact. I’m fading and wish I could see my daughters more but they know I love them and they are strong women.

My Dad was the light of my life. He passed away in 1988 and I still grieve for him. He taught me to cook, gave me music and most importantly, he taught me that people are people, regardless of color or creed and that if I truly wanted to see God, to head on up into the mountains and I would be sure to find him there. RIP Dad. You’re still my hero.

I raised my daughter alone and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Nothing else comes close and words can’t explain my love for her. The bond is unbreakable.

I am the oldest of an all girl family. My Dad was an only child. He knew NOTHING about raising girls. I love this song for the pure feeling I still have of my Dad 32 years after his passing. My great aunt looked at me this last Christmas and said: “My goodness, you’re so beautiful. You reflect your Dad so much.” I said thank you, that’s the kindest words I have ever heard. And I meant it. God bless all the Daddy’s girls in their 70’s. You never get over losing your Dad. Love ’em while you’ve got ’em. I didn’t get to say goodbye to my Daddy, but say hi Daddy every morning. He served our Nation and I could not be prouder of him to this very day.

Out beyond the reaches
Rare as a blood moon
You show, then cover up your tracks
Through the thinning branches
I watched your tail lights turn
And wondered if you're ever coming back
I am my father's daughter
Come hell or high water
Trouble came to find you
Shadowed into every word and deed 'til it got you in it's spell
They asked if I had seen you
But I've got no truck with men like them, they can go to hell
I am my father's daughter
Come hell or high water
Never gonna leave him
Despite the rights or wrongs
I've got you and I hope that you know
I am my father's daughter
Come hell or high water
Never gonna leave him
Despite the rights or wrongs
I got you and I hope that you know
And I'm right behind you
There's a light there's a light that shines wherever you go
I am my father's daughter
Come hell or high water
Lovely song

I read about this song just now and found out it was on the soundtrack for a movie called Flag Day. There is so much available to learn about artists and their inspirations and how the music came to be. It’s a welcome experience to me since my childhood music was just singer, album, lyrics. that’s all we got to know. I love knowing so much more.
Your post brought this song to mind. I used to listen to a lot of Christian music and I thought Steven Curtis Chapman had some good ones.

That’s a really sweet memory of your dad and sister reuniting. And yes, after 300+ post you definitely can cut yourself some slack. I do!
Nice song… I didn’t know it.

Perfect for Father’s Day! I got to see my dad yesterday (we live 700 miles apart). He’s doing so great at 84, and I feel lucky.
