I washed our cars the other day. Not only that, but I even went the extra mile and vacuumed the interior and the trunk. I can’t remember the last time I washed my car. It’s been ages.
When I was working, I typically went to a car wash to get it cleaned. I only had two days off on the weekend and I didn’t want to use that time with a bucket of suds and a rag. I’d pick up a donut and a hot cup of coffee on my way and relax under the awning enjoying the morning sun while I waited.
When we took our cars in for maintenance or repairs, they would include a complimentary wash. I loved this. It made paying the bill feel a little lighter.
Covid disrupted things. Working from home, my car sat idle most of the time. I guess it gave me more home time to wash it myself, but it had been forever since I’d done that. It’s difficult reaching back decades to resurrect an old habit. This was no different.
I am ashamed to say that when rain was in the forecast, I’d drive my car out to the street and let Mother Nature give it a good rinse. Ghetto, I know. The problem was it doesn’t rain much in Southern California so this strategy was few and far between. There were actual days I’d hope for rain so my car would get a good splash. If I knew a rain dance would help, I’d surely do it.
The other day was beautiful and sunny and something came over me to wash our cars. The odd thing is, I enjoyed it. And there is just a good feeling when you are driving a newly washed car. I’d forgotten what that felt like. I’m possibly turning over a new leaf. As I finished up, I thought to myself, Good thing it’s summer and no chance of rain. I’d hate to waste a good car wash. See, things are changing already.
Car Wash by Rose Royce would be the natural selection today. But I’m just not in the mood. Instead, here’s Let’s Go, by The Cars.
She says, “I like the nightlife baby”
She says, “Let’s go”
With an invitation like that, my car better be clean…

She's driving away with the dim lights on
And she's making a play, she can't go wrong
She never waits too long
She's winding them down on her clock machine
And she won't give up 'cause she's seventeen
She's a frozen fire, she's my one desire
I don't want to hold her down
Don't want to break her crown
When she says, "Let's go
I like the nightlife baby"
She says, "I like the nightlife baby"
She says, "Let's go"
She's laughing inside 'cause they can't refuse
She's so beautiful now, she doesn't wear her shoes
She never likes to choose
She's got wonderful eyes and a risqué mouth
And when I asked her before she said she's holding out
She's a frozen fire, she's my one desire
I don't want to hold her down
Don't want to break her crown
When she says, "Let's go"
I like the nightlife baby"
She says, "I like the nightlife baby"
She says, "Let's go"
"I like the nightlife baby"
She says, "I like the nightlife baby"
She says, "Let's go"
I bought a new hose for the outside spigot closest to my driveway when the last hose sprung a leak. It’s for washing the car. It’s been over a year and I still haven’t taken the hose out of its package. I have driven to the car wash. Habits!
I hadn’t heard Let’s Go in years. It didn’t bring back specific memories but it brought back a former state of mind.

I saw a hose at Costco and thought I should probably start washing our cars. I bought it that day and the rest was history…

That’s one that can take me back!
When I moved to the states to go to college, I had never heard the Cars before. I thought they were a CA band but no. My husband saw them playing in Boston bars before they were popular. Everyone knew they were going to be something!

So cool to see them play at bars before they made it big. That must have been so much fun!

Nothing like a clean car! The Cars were huge around here when I was in high school. Their songs always take me right back. So many hits.

Love The Cars, or specifically, Rik Ocasek’s voice!
I lived next door to someone who washed their car what seemed like every day. It was such a puzzle to me, but now I’m pretty regular about it, which ironically I think is because my current car isn’t as nice/fancy as my car then. Funny psychology. 🙂

Man, it’s been forever since I’ve washed my car… It sits in our garage, so it hasn’t really needed it. but… ^_^
