My Gen X Playlist: Live – The Bangles

I’m starting a new job Monday. I was looking for a good fit, one that would hopefully lean towards a better work life balance. I’m a realist, if nothing else. There will be times of pressure and stress. It’s unavoidable. It’s in those times I have to take deep breaths and relax. Work is important, but so is health and life.

There was a big chunk of years that all I did was work and rarely took vacation. Yeah, I may have squeezed in a Vegas trip or two, but those really don’t count. Vegas is practically in my backyard. It began to dawn on me that my life choices were questionable when I stopped accruing vacation days. I never took time off and my unused vacation balance maxed out. That royally sucked.

I remember meeting friends at the beach one summer and someone commented I was pale as a ghost. I actually tan really well so this was odd to hear. There was a long stretch that I would get to the office by 6 am and not leave until 10 pm. I never saw the sun. I basically stayed indoors all the time without a breath of fresh air or ray of sunshine. Saturdays I still went into the office and Sundays I slept. What the hell.

I’ve become better over the years. I can see myself revert back up my old ways if I’m not careful. I have to remind myself that life is too precious not to live it.

The Bangles’ Live was from their debut album All Over the Place. I didn’t know until today that this was a cover of the sixties band Merry-Go-Round. The lyrics provide a great reminder to live and not let life pass you by.

    I don’t think you’re going to fall back into your old workaholic ways. You’ve evolved. Will you be hybrid or remote or fully in-person?

  6. I’ve never had quite the health needed to work myself into the ground. I’m not calling that a blessing, but it does give pause at times. I hope this new job is JUST RIGHT!
