My Gen X Playlist: Sunday Bloody Sunday – U2

I haven’t watched or read the news in a few weeks. It’s been easier to put my head in the sand and just binge Netflix.

Last week I decided to choose something completely different and turned on The Today Show with Hoda and Jenna. It was nice to chill with lightweight entertaining TV. I even cracked a smile. What a great break from the darkness of the news. Who would have thought I’d watch Hoda and Jenna? What a pleasant surprise.

I know this is just a temporary thing and I’ll eventually go back to the news. But right now I can’t help but think of the opening lines to Sunday Bloody Sunday.

There are two Bloody Sundays in Irish history. The first was in 1920 when British troops fired into the crowd at a football match in Dublin in retaliation for the killing of British undercover agents. The second was on January 30, 1972, when British troops killed 13 Irish citizens at a civil rights protest in Derry, Northern Ireland. The song is more about the second Bloody Sunday, which had a profound impact on U2 frontman Bono, who was 11 years old at the time.

Bono wrote this song under the strife he experienced growing up as a child. I wonder if there will be an 11 year old destined to pen a song about whatever insanity comes in the next four years. Oh, and I just learned Hoda is retiring. Let’s hope Jenna and the new guy are just as good and get great ratings so I can enjoy some light weight distraction every now and then. It may be the only way to maintain my sanity.

  4. I’ve stopped watching the news for the most part. Too depressing! I haven’t watched the Today Show in years! I used to let it play in the background as I got ready for work every morning. The most memorable morning was 9/11. I remember one of the hosts saying, “You need to come to the TV to see this shocking video.” I stood frozen in front of the TV and saw the 2nd plane crash into the tower live! What a tragic day!

  8. My reworking of media intake and news sourcing is ongoing, but I’m beginning to venture. Listened at another blogger’s rec, to SmartHer news, which I like so far. Although I’m also subscribed to Heather Cox Richardson, I have only been able to skim her newsletters so far. She’s comprehensive and strong, and it’s painful.

    I want to have the passion of U2 in those first years, but don’t want to need it.
