I follow the blog The Beginning at Last. Occasionally he posts his photos of the moon. I always think they are pretty cool.
His latest moon post made me do a few searches about the moon. A few interesting facts:
The moon experiences earthquakes (or moonquakes) – Just like the Earth, the moon has a crust that shifts and changes. Moonquakes can occur when the lunar crust warms and expands, or they can be triggered by meteorite impacts.
The moon’s surface has footprints – Man hasn’t set foot on the moon in more than four decades, and yet, fresh prints remain. Is this evidence of an alien life form? Nah, they’re just leftover astronaut footprints. Because there’s no wind on the moon, tracks can last millions of years.
The moon is disappearing – Each year, the moon’s orbit moves about four centimeters away from the Earth, meaning that in a mere 500 million years, the moon will be 14,600 miles farther away than it is right now.
Honesty, this has a strange resemblance when I commit an embarrassing faux pas. A quake erupts inside me and even when the ordeal subsides, it leaves indelible footprints that can’t be erased. It takes a long time for it to eventually exit my orbit. I’m just glad it’s quicker than four centimeters per year. Otherwise I think I’d go crazy.
Echo and the Bunnymen released The Killing Moon in 1984. Ian McCulloch describes how that great line in the chorus appeared.
“I woke up with that lyric, ‘Fate up against your will,’ as if God had given it to me in my sleep. Recently I realized what it is – it’s that soliloquy, ‘To be or not to be’ – but it’s even better, because I’m f—in’ singing it.”
“I never really tell people what the meaning is to all the songs because that surely spoils their journey. When they listen to something like ‘The Killing Moon,’ there are so many different ideas of what that is about. To me it’s like to be or not to be moments.”
Maybe those quakes I experience are my own little to be or not to be moments. Moments when I want to crawl under a rock and hide. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I’ve had too many of them to count so I know that I will eventually stand up, dust myself off and carry on. So if I have to answer the question, my answer is to be. It’s just a bit of a kick in the balls to get over that not to be feeling.

Under blue moon, I saw you
So soon you'll take me
Up in your arms, too late to beg you
Or cancel it, though I know it must be
The killing time
Unwillingly mine
Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him
In starlit nights, I saw you
So cruelly, you kissed me
Your lips, a magic world
Your sky, all hung with jewels
The killing moon
Will come too soon
Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him
Under blue moon, I saw you
So soon you'll take me
Up in your arms, too late to beg you
Or cancel it, though I know it must be
The killing time
Unwillingly mine
Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him
Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him
You give yourself to him
La
La, la, la, la
La, la, la, la
La, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him
You give yourself to him
La, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him
Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him
La, la, la, la
La, la, la, la
Great, great song choice! That’s some classic 80s GenX right there! I also always loved the lines: “The killing time
Unwillingly mine”

Those are good lines. That made me go back and review all of the lyrics! Great Gen X song indeed!

Whoa, nice metaphor! I love the fact that he woke up with that phrase on his mind. Another “moon” song I like is Fingernail Moon. Annie Lennox on Songs of Mass Destruction. https://youtu.be/4HNetWSopnE?si=Q7eSs1MQ05HBG3iY

Another song from Lennox, nice! I’m going to have to listen to the complete album!

Moon facts in a bundle! Love that.
Had forgotten all about this group, too. How did I let that happen? 🙂

It’s always fun to be surprised by remembering an old group or song.

Great post and song choice! I’ve always liked that haunting edge to Ian McCulloch’s voice. And we were both on an extraterrestrial bent with our posts today!
