My Gen X Playlist: All I Want – Toad the Wet Sprocket

Singing Gecko wrote about a wonderful phrase that stuck with me.

“…the unrepeatable nature of a moment.”

True, some fleeting moments can never be replicated. I’m not sure if that is a good thing or bad thing. There is beauty in the certainty that no two moments can ever be the same. At the same time, it’s accompanied by a sadness that it’s impossible to ever relive that exact moment. There usually are two sides to every coin.

A buddy of mine went to UC Santa Barbara and was a big fan of the local band Toad the Wet Sprocket. I’d hear them on the radio in the 90’s but they stuck with me because he loved them so much. Toad’s All I Want seems to compliment the sentiment of a fleeting moment. Lead singer, Glen Phillips, explains:

“If you look at the verse, it’s very much about how fleeting any kind of epiphany is. It’s all about the moment passing very, very quickly and how there’s a desire to hold onto it.”

Moral of the story: Be present in the moment. I need to make sure that I’m not distracted by life (or my phone) with full appreciation of the moments as they occur. Otherwise, I just might miss them. I may need to make an appointment with my doctor to have my darn phone surgically removed from my hand. It may be the only way. One day Elon Musk will have developed a way to surgically implant a chip in our heads. If that happens, I may never get out of bed or experience life at all. Good thing I’m a late adopter to technology. I mean, a few months ago I had an IPhone 7 for goodness sakes. A chip in the head? Sorry, Elon. I think I’ll pass.

  1. For me it’s a constant daily struggle, staying in the moment…it makes me think of that meme with the older lady in amongst a younger crowd at a concert and she’s the only one NOT on a phone videoing it or taking pics…she’s just purely in that moment, taking it all in.

  3. I’m ambivalent about the whole chip in the head thing. Ever since the idea of it came out, I’ve been on the fence about whether or not I’d be a willing participant. Dunno if I’ll live long enough to find out, but… we’ll see. ^_^ Living in the moment is my way of life. 🙂

  7. This is a groovy rhythm for the day, and a song I know the chorus of so well for not recognizing any of the other lyrics! Thanks too for the shout out, too!

    A decade ago I would have considered myself an early adopter. I was so optimistic about virtual reality and even loved the idea of having a chip implanted so that I could know Spanish, which has been so hard for me to learn. Now, I find myself planning phoneless walks and time just sitting in a room without anything on. The initial separation anxiety is no joke, but that’s all the more reason to make the effort. 🙂

      1. Didn’t mean to give that impression, or well, breaking free is just in small bits so far. 🙂 Making the efforts, though. I guess I owe one of my managers credit, because she constantly texts and if I don’t leave my phone alone, I’ll feel compelled to always answer. 😀
