I was reading Reflections by Iba and one of her recent posts mentions the lottery. I’m not a regular when it comes to the lottery. In fact, I only play if someone at work takes up a collection for the office. The thought of collectively walking out after we’ve won is a fun visual.
We had dinner with friends once and the lottery had gotten to a bajillion dollars. We laughed and thought about everything we would do if we won. On a whim, I told them I’d pick up a bunch of lottery tickets for all of us so we at least had a shot. You can’t win if you don’t play, I said.
The next day, I called them and said I’d text them our numbers. My friend asked where I bought the tickets. Down the street at the local Ralph’s supermarket, I replied. He laughed and yelled out to his wife, OMG, he bought the tickets in a grocery store! We lost for sure! My rookie mistake. It seems winning tickets commonly came from either remote stores in the middle of nowhere or liquor stores in the city. Needless to say, we didn’t win. But that’s OK, I still had 24 hours of daydreaming what I’d do with all that cash. It was still worth the price for admission.
The only daydreaming song I know is Daydream Believer by The Monkees. As a kid we watched The Monkees TV show and I didn’t realize they were a fictional band until many years later.
The Monkees were a fictional band that became real. They were assembled for the TV series The Monkees, which was in its second (and final) season when they performed “Daydream Believer” on the October 9, 1967 episode. By this time, the group had a big following and a string of hits buoyed by the show. The song played in three more episodes and rose to number one.
A fictional band with a number one hit. What are the chances of that? That just proves anything is possible. Maybe it’s time to pick up a few lottery tickets this for the new year and roll the dice. You can’t win if you don’t play, right?

Oh, I could hide 'neath the wings
Of the bluebird as she sings
The six o'clock alarm would never ring
But six rings and I rise
Wipe the sleep out of my eyes
My shaving razor's cold and it stings
Cheer up, sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean to a
Daydream believer and a
Homecoming queen?
You once thought of me
As a white knight on his steed
Now you know how happy I can be
Oh and our good time starts and ends
Without dollar one to spend
But how much, baby, do we really need?
Cheer up, sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean to a
Daydream believer and a
Homecoming queen?
Cheer up, sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean to a
Daydream believer and a
Homecoming queen?
Cheer up, sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean to a
Daydream believer and a
Homecoming queen?
Cheer up, sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean to a
Daydream believer and a
Homecoming queen?
Cheer up, sleepy Jean
Always loved this song

I would’ve done what you did by buying at a grocery store IF I ever buy one. Who knew that you had to buy at a liquor store to be lucky?!!

I never buy lotto tickets either, it’s just so disappointing when I don’t win. Not worth it lol.
I only know Anne Murray’s version of this song I think 🤔

Fabulous song, gives me all the feels. 🙂
I totally get playing the lottery just for the daydream fuel, too.

The feeling is worth the couple of bucks every once in a while!

True enough. Next best feeling generator of this sort is the HGTV Dream Home. 🙂

Fictional yet real enough to tour as a headliner and have The Jimi Hendrix Experiece be the opener

Are you serious? Hendrix opened for them???

Yup

It’s an amazing thought. First, their style of music is so different. Second, Hendrix is next level. Pretty fascinating piece of history

Great song choice. ‘The Monkees’ was a favourite TV series when it first hit the airwaves. Their songs always had a nice, light tone to them; good pick-me-ups.

I liked them too. Someone recently commented that Jimi Hendrix opened for them on tour. Crazy thought!

I know. They were suppose to be a fictitious band…

I was too young to get that they weren’t a real band either!
My brother and I loved The Monkeys. They had a few catchy songs, “ I’m a believer” too, I think. Maybe if you believe you’re a real band hard enough, you kinda are one? At least you convince some young impressionable viewers anyway. Fun music fact.
Fun post

They were a fun band growing up!

actually, they were a real band and because they insisted using their own band on the show – there almost wasn’t a show at all – but the producers finally gave in. they wrote their own music as well.

Thanks for the comment on that. I remember the series fondly but for the life of me, can’t remember an episode storyline. But I did like their music!
