Absent any new WordPress daily prompts, I pulled one from thecoffeemonsterzco.
Does how you feel about your appearance affect how you act during the day?
Prior to starting my new job, my barber had shoulder surgery and would be off for six months. It wasn’t initially much of a concern since I was still on my sabbatical from work. Hair a little unruly? That’s what baseball caps are for. When I received the job offer and desired start date, I got a little concerned. My barber wouldn’t be back to work for a few months. I had to find a total stranger to step in.
In my head, this started becoming a huge cataclysmic problem. Just to refresh your memory, I had a near death experience here. OK, hyperbole. But you get the picture. Traumatic events are difficult to shake, no matter how old they are.
I started on Yelp. I also received a recommendation from a friend. That seemed more reliable than looking at a bunch of stars on an app, right? All in all, I can’t complain. The stranger did enough to get the job done. Over the collar, out of my eyes, over the ears. It didn’t quite sit right on my head, but it wasn’t totally out of the ballpark either. It was fine for now, a much needed temporary band aid.
I received a glorious text that my barber is back in the saddle again. I went to see her and she worked her magic. There is nothing more comforting than sitting in a barber’s chair not having to explain the style or the cut, not watching every little snip or trim, or praying the vision in her head matches what I’m hoping for. I walked in. Smiled. We caught up as she switched between her clippers, scissors and razor. When she was all done, I literally felt human again. Suddenly, all was right in the world. All this from a simple haircut. There is something to be said about the little things in life. For me, a care free haircut is one of them.
I probably only know a handful of songs from Haircut 100. To their credit, they aren’t sporting the Flock of Seagulls look. Here’s one from the early eighties – Love Plus One.

I, I went off to the right
Without saying good goodbye
Where does it go from here?
Is it down to the lake I fear?
Ay ay ay ay ay ah
Ay ay ay ay ay ah
Then I call
Ring, ring, ring, ring
La la love plus one
Ring, ring, ring, ring
When I call love
Give love some soul
If I may be quite so bold
Where does it go from here?
Is it down to the lake I fear?
Ay ay ay ay ay ah
Ay ay ay ay ay ah
Then I call
Ring, ring, ring, ring
La la love plus one
Ring, ring, ring, ring
When I call love
Love plus one
Ah, there’s an 80s song if there ever was one… many memories of it.
As for haircuts, I had a few horror show cuts in my time and can totally relate to what you went through in the older post you linked to… and of course the VP would be there as you arrived! Glad your barber is back in the chair (or standing over it, as it were).
I’m very short-sighted so without my glasses I couldn’t ever see what the barber was doing, so the end result was always a surprise. For the last ten years or so there’s not been any on top, so paying for a “full” haircut always felt like a rip-off. At the start of lockdown I bought electric clippers and my sweety started doing buzz-cuts. I’d still rather have my voluminous locks again, but life is also a lot simpler!

I’m glad (and not so glad, of course) someone could feel my pain. Sweety buzzing your hair is a good move. I may be there one day, too!

“a near death experience.” 😂 my haircut story is that i got a wild hare in high school and got an afro perm one weekend. it was wild. my classmates had a good laugh. i have no idea what i was thinking. glad your barber is back and all is right again with the world and your tonsure.

Nice! How long did the afro perm last? That must have given your friends a great laugh!
If I look on the bright side, my hair grows relatively fast and I still have some up top. Gotta take a positive spin on this…

I didn’t think I knew that one and then…Ay ay ay ay ay ah

I was looking at this prompt yesterday and as usual got me thinking. I’ll tackle this one day.
I used to think males didn’t have haircut woes until I met my husband. He’s particular who cuts his hair too and now it’s my son 😀.
