I was at Trader Joe’s shopping for groceries for the week. I picked up a package of green grapes without really looking at the label. It turns out they were cotton candy grapes.
I scratched my head as I was washing them. What the hell are cotton candy grapes? I was in for a surprise. They actually tasted like cotton candy.
At first, they were a little too sweet for my taste buds. After a few more, they eventually grew on me, but I couldn’t eat too many at one time. Will I continue to buy them? Probably not on a regular basis. They’re too sweet for everyday consumption. I did enjoy their novelty, though.
Cotton candy grapes are a hybrid of two grape varieties: a concord grape variety and the Princess grape. This particular concord grape tastes like cotton candy, but the texture is too soft to market as table grapes.
I’m Gen X, so Josie Cotton comes to mind. I always thought she had a cool stage name. Turns out, it was her actual name – at least for a part of her life growing up.
Wikipedia once listed her birth name as Kathleen Josey, so she was asked where Cotton came from. But in a 2009 interview with Magnet Magazine, she set the record straight: “I was actually born Josie Jones. My mother kept marrying and taking her maiden name back – she was married six times. Cotton is actually a family name from way back.”
Josie Cotton’s He Could Be the One was in the movie Valley Girl. Such an 80’s movie with a great soundtrack. This one is still an oldie but goodie.
Remember growing up in the Valley in Southern California listening to these hits and being a Valley Girl to the Maxx! lol Such fun simple times I wish never ended.

I’ve tried those cotton candy grapes at Trader Joe’s too! They taste exactly like cotton candy. It was good but probably too sweet for our health.

The taste took me by surprise! A little too sweet. I can only eat a handful at a time.

Wait. There was a Valley Girl movie. I only remember the song, which I loved. How did I miss the movie?

The movie was meh… but the soundtrack was incredible, though. I think it was the first Nicholas Cage movie I went to.

And by song, I meant “Valley Girl” by Frank Zappa, which apparently was not in the movie.

That’s right… not in the movie. I found the movie and tried to watch it again. I mostly sped up to the songs I liked. It’s better left in the 80s

Well that’s a new one. I never heard this song til today 😁

She’s old school 80’s

Yeah, more like obscure 80’s.

Yeah, I might have to agree with that. They used to play a few of her songs in the early eighties so it felt like old school to me

Even her hit song “Johnny are you queer”, never heard in my life.

That was a pretty big hit for her. The Go Gos used to perform that song, too. I only heard it afterwards when I heard it on YouTube.

But you saw the film Valley Girl, I may have seen that but it didn’t resonate with me as much as say Fast times or The Last American Virgin which both had a lot of cool music.

So funny…I love green grapes, and my husband got me some last week while he was out, which was very thoughtful, but he accidentally got cotton candy grapes. I’ve tried them before, and they taste like cotton candy, but they’re a little too sweet for a typical green grape. 🤣

Us husbands should pay more attention to labels!

Those grapes are soooo good! But I agree they shouldn’t be eaten every day. I discovered them a long time ago. 😅

I think, based on your description of the flavour, those would be a hard pass for me. Black seedless are my fave grape, as long as they’re very firm. Catchy song… I think it’s a new one for me. You always have a unique and interesting way of linking the song to the post theme!

Thanks, Steve! I appreciate the kind words. I’m with you. My grape of choice are black seedless as well. The cotton candy grapes were a little too soft for my liking.

My pleasure!
Soft grapes are the worst! *shudders

Cotton candy grapes, sound exotic. So are they flavored with candy?
The grapes we get when ripe are sweet enough, imagine adding sweet candy to it.

It’s their natural flavor. A little too sweet…

Hmmm, I’m curious how that came about. I’m not a sweet person 😀.
