The other night was the first of three musicals we signed up for. We saw Annie. In my mind, I didn’t walk in with too much expectations because we mainly bought the package for the other two: Momma Mia and Hamilton. I considered Annie to be an add on.
As we drove to the playhouse, someone asked the question, What’s this story about anyway? We all looked each other without a definitive clue. It’s funny, we all grew up hearing about Annie without really knowing her at all. We took up a collection of facts and here’s what we knew.
- Little red headed orphan girl
- She has a cute dog
- Probably the person who runs the orphanage is not kind
- There’s some guy named Daddy Warbucks. Who is this guy?
- The sun will come out tomorrow
- It will most likely have a happy ending
That’s all we had. We sifted through these facts and were able to weave a plausible story from there. And when you think about it, it’s not rocket science. We were spot on. And the icing on the cake is we discovered who Daddy Warbucks really was – the guy whose heart is softened by Annie and he adopts her in the end. I’m not going to lie. I had to fight back the urge from saying, Who’s your daddy? a number of times. After all, we were at the theater and I wanted to be civilized and be on my best behavior. But you know I was thinking it.
Overall, not bad. I give the kids a lot of credit for performing on a big stage. That can’t be easy. And I think the cute dog stole the show. So sweet and well behaved. Will I ever see it again? Probably not. Was it a waste of my time? No to that, too. I’m just glad I got a chuckle every time I asked Who’s your daddy? in my head. Real mature, I know.
Despite being unsure of the storyline, we were familiar with the theme song, Tomorrow. For the playlist today, however, I’m choosing a more modern day song. The Cranberries released Tomorrow in 2011, after time off to pursue solo careers.
“Tomorrow” is an upbeat and fresh song that successfully features Irish lead singer Dolores O’Riordan’s range of vocal ability. Her voice is featured prominently, proclaiming the lyrics “tomorrow could be so great/if only you had some faith.” When you listen to the song there is a sense of optimism with wanting to press on with life when things get you down.
Both songs are about optimism for the future. While the Annie theme song is a classic, the Cranberries’ song is more my speed.

I think that you're mad
You spend a lot of time in your head
I know that you're mad
You spend a lot of time in your head
If you could come away with me
You should come away with me
You should have some faith in me
Tomorrow could be too late
I wish I could change the date
Tomorrow could be too late
If only you had some faith
Too young, too proud, too foolish
Too young, too proud, too foolish
You ask a lot of questions
You have too much time on your hands
To hell with conclusions
Why should we make so many plans?
So you should come away with me
You should come away with me
You should have some faith in me
Tomorrow could be too late
I wish I could change the date
Tomorrow could be too late
If only you had some faith
Too young, too proud, too foolish
Too young, too proud, too foolish
Tomorrow could be so great
I wish I could change the date
Tomorrow could be so great
If only you had some faith
Wow, I can’t believe you hadn’t seen the show before! How was your Miss Hannigan? That role can sometimes steal the show.

I know. Hard to believe I haven’t even an inkling of the story! Miss Hannigan was fun. I can see how she could steal the show.

I love that you had to suppress your urge to say “Who’s your daddy?” I’ve never seen Annie either. Glad you enjoyed it.

I’ve seen Annie but not the other two, so I could have answered your question. ^_^

I actually felt a little surprised I didn’t know the storyline. Annie has been around forever!

I mean, if you’ve never seen it, then you wouldn’t know… There are tons of plays I’ve never seen that have been around forever. ^_^

I haven’t seen ‘Annie’ either. Great song title choice, and strangely enough, this is a new one for me! Lovely, uplifting song with that divine voice of Dolores.

Yeah, her voice was lovely. I have a special fondness for the Cranberries. I bought their first CD when I lived abroad and music was what got me through homesickness living in a foreign country. I listened to their music a lot back then.
