My wife was visiting her family for a week and I was on my own to fend for myself. Typically my wife and I share the cooking duties so I’m not totally helpless when it comes to making a meal. When it’s only one, though, cooking an entire meal seems like a lot of work.
I guess I could have picked up, but after a long days work, I didn’t feel like jumping in my car to go out, even for take out. I seemed to just make do with what was in the pantry and frig.
Now that I look back on it, I basically ate breakfast related foods throughout the week. Coffee always for breakfast. Sometimes I added a fruit smoothie or a fried egg sandwich. Lunch had a rotation of oatmeal, fruit salad or toast. Vegetarian omelette or eggs and fried potatoes for dinner. Once I was so tired I basically ate two bowls of Honey Bunches and Oats. A few times I made pancakes for dessert. That was fun. I rotated a variety of accompaniments – syrup, jam, honey, peanut butter or fresh fruit. You can’t go wrong with breakfast anytime during the day.
Now that she’s returned, everything is back to normal and every meal is back in its proper place. Order is restored. But I may hang on to pancakes for dessert. That wasn’t a bad idea.
I should have been looking for songs about breakfast. After I wrote the word order, I couldn’t help go down a New Order rabbit hole. I bought their albums as a kid but I’m not sure I ever bought their CDs. So they’ve been in my blind spot all these years. It was a nice walk down 80’s lane. Here is True Faith. Absolutely nothing to do with pancakes. Just a great song from my youth.

I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A certain sense of liberty
I don't care, 'cause I'm not there
And I don't care if I'm here tomorrow
Again and again I've taken too much
Of the things that cost you too much
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see the light in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun
When I was a very small boy
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see
That's the price that we all pay
And the value of destiny comes to nothing
I can't tell you where we're going
I guess there's just no way of knowing
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see the light in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun...
I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A certain sense of liberty
The chances are we've gone too far
You took my time and you took my money
Now I fear you've left me standing
In a world that's so demanding
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see the light in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun...
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see the light in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun...
On the morning sun...
On the morning sun...
On the morning sun...
On the morning sun...
On the morning sun...
On the morning sun...

So are we wanting songs about breakfast or breakfast foods or songs that reference pancakes? The first song that came instantly to mind was ‘Bread and Butter’ by the New Beats and then I Googled “songs about breakfast” – oh that was fun. The first song I played was ‘Banana Pancakes’ by Jack Johnson – and there I stayed. Nice song…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-v-LGOfaKo

New Order (and Joy Division) are just so 80s! You sent me down a rabbit hole. My most goth roommate in college listened to them all the time.

It’s a good rabbit hole to go down…

Nothing wrong with breakfast foods any time of the day. It’s a selling point for some restaurants.
