I was out with friends a few months ago and the subject of retirement popped up. One friend is contemplating it next year. He’s worked hard his entire life, saved and invested well. He’s crunching the numbers to see if it can be done.
Another friend has been a firefighter and paramedic for over 25 years. He qualifies for his pension and is weighing his options. He’s been shot at while fighting fires during the Rodney King riots, battled the Malibu brush fires during summer and now makes countless paramedic runs in the city. I think he deserves a little R&R.
I also have a good friend who has been teaching elementary school for over 30 years. She’s an amazing teacher, but teaching these days isn’t what it used to be. The additional administrative burden and politics steal the joy from teaching. She’s trying to figure out if it can be done. I hope she finds a way.
And then there’s me, hoping to eke out another five years and then see if the numbers work out then. The recent stock market crash is concerning. The shocking thing is it doesn’t have to be. It’s one hundred percent self inflicted and avoidable. At this rate, we all may have to reevaluate our retirement horizons.
Fuck.
I was thinking about the stock market turbulence and The Primitive’s Crash came to mind. I started listening to the lyrics and the first two verses remind me of a certain someone.
Here you go, way too fast
Don’t slow down, you’re gonna crash
You should watch, watch your step
Don’t look out, gonna break your neck
So shut, shut your mouth
Cause I’m not listening anyhow
I’ve had enough, enough of you
Enough to last a lifetime through
I’ve definitely had enough of Trump to last a lifetime. It’s going to be a long four years.

You should watch, watch your step
Don’t look out, gonna break your neck
So shut, shut your mouth
Cause I’m not listening anyhow
I’ve had enough, enough of you
Enough to last a lifetime through
So what do you want of me
Got no words of sympathy
And if I go around with you
You know that I get messed up, too
With you
Na na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na na na
Here you go, way too fast
Don’t slow down, you’re gonna crash
You don’t know what’s been going down
You’ve been running all over town
So shut, shut your mouth
Cause I’m not listening anyhow
I’ve had enough, enough of you
Enough to last a lifetime through
Here’s to hoping he doesn’t last four years.

Ah, retirement. Who knows if Social Security will still be there in the next 10 years?

Big question mark!

Preach it brother. The song is entirely apropos.
Be careful what you wish for, as far as retirement goes. I was forced into retirement during Covid and it was rough. I’m used to have a regimented schedule. Maybe you can set up some sort of low-stress side hustle as a way to transition into full retirement.

I’ve been brainstorming side hustles. Nothing really comes to mind yet. It’s difficult to come up with something that can really work out.

I get it–I tried, but I believe age is a factor in my case. Keep researching. Something will click, I’m sure.

People our age (approaching retirement) have so much to lose with this chaotic clown. Perfect song choice!

Yes, indeed. Sometimes I’m not sure he realizes he’s impacting people’s lives. Then again, narcissists don’t really care.

Sadly, for me, at this point, my retirement plan is death.
That seems a little bit more realistic than winning the lottery

I’m hoping it’s looking better than you think.

Oh no, he owes the world an more than an apology, but that couldn’t even be in our dreams.
