We finally pulled the trigger and bought a car. And no, we didn’t buy a Tesla. My wife was biting her tongue when I was considering it. Ultimately, my conscious wouldn’t allow it.
Part of the struggle deciding on a car was agreeing who was going to drive it. I wanted the car for my wife and I would drive her car. I didn’t mind. Her car still ran well and the new one would have all the safety features. She, on the other hand, loves her car and wanted me to treat myself. I secretly campaigned for cars that she would enjoy and was covertly (well, maybe I’m not that smooth) nudging her towards something she’d like. She kept wondering why I was suggesting cars that didn’t quite match me.
Finally after months of doing the dance, we threw our cards on the table. She was adamant I chose a car for myself. I ultimately gave in and we finally picked one. I think if we both were a little more forthcoming and I was a better listener, we could have avoided all this round and round business.
It may take me a little while to get used to the new car. I’ve had my other one for so long. Even though my car was still in pretty good shape, it was time to let it go. In a strange way, I’m going to miss it. It’s silly to be sentimental about a hunk of metal and wheels, I know.
The first car I ever bought was a Honda Accord. It was right after college and a used one was all I could afford. And yeah, it wasn’t new, but I didn’t care. It was a good car. Good old Honda. Because buying it on my own was one of the first adulting things I ever did, it holds a special place in my heart.
Thinking about that Honda reminded me of a band I saw play at an open performance in Pasadena. I was walking by, heard their sound and stopped to check them out. Not bad, I thought. Later when I looked them up, I discovered they once filmed themselves recording a song entirely in their Honda as they drove throughout LA. This music video caught the attention of Honda and well, this happened. Pretty cool. Here is the original video of Monsters Calling Home* singing Fight to Keep in their Honda. I’m a sucker for a good story like this. They may not have hit it big, but they experienced a memorable moment whose footprint will forever be theirs. All because of a ride in their Honda. So cool.

I left my heart on the top of a windowsill
Fell apart when the winds pulled it down
On the ground where the sun drove the colors deep
In the summer heat the colors seemed to drown
In the summer heat the colors seemed to drown
But you pulled up the colors with a simple tune
You breathed a song, oh, dusted off the sand
You put the pieces on your sleeve, oh, you gave my heart to me
It looked so pretty that I fell upon my knees
It looked so pretty that I fell upon my knees
And from the ground I saw your face
You spoke of love, oh, you sang of grace
But come the night when the light is gone
It's in the dark that my deeds are done
What I've done in darkness, I must turn away
This mended heart is meant for so much more
Though the wind is tellin' me that it's ok
I'll stand my ground till I hear the kingdom come
I'll stand my ground till I hear the kingdom come
So, I will fight to keep the fire burning in the night
I found words to keep me still
Though I'm prone to go and make the same mistakes
I hear your voice callin' out my name
And from the ground I saw your face
You spoke of love, oh, you sang of grace
But come the night when the light is gone
It's in the dark that my deeds are done
And from the ground I saw your face
You spoke of love, oh, you sang of grace
But come the night when the light is gone
It's in the dark that my deeds are done
So, I will fight to keep the fire burning in the night
(Fight to keep the fire burning)
Fight to keep the fire burning in the night
(Fight to keep the fire burning)
Fight to keep the fire burning in the night
(Fight to keep the fire burning)
Yes, I will fight to keep the fire burning in the night
(Fight to keep the fire burning)
Oh, fight to keep the fire burning
Fight to keep the fire burning
Fight to keep the fire burning in the night
(Fight to keep the fire burning)
Fight to keep the fire burning
Fight to keep the fire burning
Fight to keep the fire burning in the night
Fight to keep the fire burning
(Fight to keep the fire burning)
Fight to keep the fire burning
(Fight to keep the fire burning)
Fight to keep the fire burning
(Fight to keep the fire burning)
Fight to keep the fire burning
Our first car always has a special place in our hearts… I guess bc it’s our first chance at true independence. RIP, good ol’ Honda… 🥲

It is a great story! We looked at the Honda EV model as an option but decided against an EV altogether. Technology changes so fast and we tend to hold on to our cars for a long time. We decided on a hybrid instead. Great baby step to an EV down the road.

Aw, I love Hondas. I’m in my CRV all the time. I had Odysseys while my kids were growing up. Congrats on the new car!
