My Gen X Playlist: A Campfire Song – 10,000 Maniacs

  1. Please…no guilt about needing more comfort as time moves along. My idea of “roughing it” is a VanHool camper all tricked out with a kitchen, bedroom, and the ever-important shower/head. And heat/AC. Close to a door dash accessible restaurant would be a plus. But I digress… 🙂

As an amateur nature photographer, I do love the outdoors…but during daylight, thankyouverymuch.

That said, great song. Natalie Merchant is one of a handful of female voices that I like.

    1. My wife once said she might be open to camping. But I know her too well. I told her if I don’t enjoy sleeping in a tent, she probably wouldn’t either. A cabin or hotel room might be more comfortable. Especially with showers and a better bathroom situation. She gave it some thought and came to her senses.

  2. I understand the slow creep from roughing it to (in my case) owning a small camper then to owning a large camper, and now alas the final creep of a house. It’s the barrier between nature and self that we don’t want to build up, right? Don’t ask me how we keep that barrier thin while we get older and need those comforts. I’m the last person to ask.

    1. I totally agree. I just received my air mattress from Amazon. It’s about 12 inches high. Now that I succumbed to embracing comfort, I can’t wait to try it out in my tent.

      1. That’s so funny—we’re in the process of buying a 12-in foam mattress for an apartment, and I can’t wait to put new sheets on it. We are different sides of the same SNAP!

    1. Hahaha… yes, it’s not a good commercial for camping. It’s balanced out by early morning coffee watching the sun rise, amazing views on hikes, catching fish and grilling them on an open fire, a sky full of stars we never see in the city and hanging out with your buddies sitting around a campfire. That makes it worth the uncomfortable nights in a tent!

  3. “I just liked the jangly melody and the duet with Michael Stipe”
    Same.
Like you, I played this entire album endlessly. Listening to it now, takes me right back to that time.

    1. Natalie Merchant was pretty special. I saw her solo at a small venue and it was a cool experience. It was an intimate performance. I followed her solo career until I became so engrossed in career that I stopped listening to music altogether. I might have to catch up on about 20 years of her music.

      1. Same! I saw her play at a club called The Channel in Boston in the late 80s. (I mainly remember she had on a hoodie that obscured her face.) Then I got busy with kids and stopped listening to much music. My friend saw her a couple years ago perform with the Rhode Island Philharmonic. She said she sounded amazing! Her incredible alto voice is still going strong I guess.

      2. I wouldn’t mind seeing her again. What stuck with me was her vibe. I saw her when she went solo but I wish I saw her free spirit when she was with 10K Maniacs. I read she lost her singing voice for awhile after a surgery. Glad that she has healed and back to performing.

  4. My sister went to a one week hiking trip in Colorado. She showed me all the pictures of her hiking and camping trip and now I’m convinced that maybe I should go with her next year. I am not a huge fan of sleeping outside in the woods and dealing with bears and stuff. 😅
